I?m hooking up two desktop computers 40 ft apart windows xp on one and windows 98 on the other, also a laptop with XP.
Should I be using a USB connector on the laptop and wireless nics on the others or what is the best solution for this setup? I'm not familiar with wireless at all...

Any assistance would be appreciated.

I would get a standard commercial wireless broadband router. Pick your brand (DLink, Linksys, Belkin, Microsoft etc) and stardard (802.11b or g. g is more expensive). They are all relatively cheap these days. Put a PCI NIC card into each desktop and run some cat5 cable to the router. Then get a wireless PCMCIA card for the laptop and wander throughout the house and backyard surfing the web.
The max throughput you will get on a wireless network is about 8-10 Mbits/sec using 802-11g and about 4 Mbits/sec using 802.11b. So if you plan on doing a lot of file sharing you may want to have a wired option for your laptop.

I'd also try to locate the wireless router in a centeral location in the house to maximize the range to the laptop, since the PCMCIA cards typically don't have a lot of range.

when ever you can use wireline. that is best solution always, unless access is an issue in that case go wireless.

but really, waht do you want to know? how to make them wireless? or do you jsut want to set them up?
