2 WINXP on same C Drive

I started with Xp Pro - version 2002. After my system developed some uncontrollable glitches I decided to do a clean re-install.

Using the XP CD, I went through the set up process and since I'm now using 512 MB, I decided to convert to NTFS.

After installing I still have the old Xp system plus the new Xp.

* Installations on: C:\WINDOWS and on C:\WINXP

When I bootup I must choose which XP Pro to load. I did another clean install thinking that I would delete one, but it didn't work.

Here are the detailed steps I took in Setup:

1)Continued without repairing system by pressing "ESC".

*Only 1 partiton shows on next page of setup:
C: Partiton1 [NTFS] 38162 MB <29127 MB Free>

2)Attempted to delete the selected partition but unable (partition contains temporary setup files required to complete installation).

3)Pressed ENTER to setup Windows XP on existing Partition1.

*You chose to install Windows XP on a partiton that contains another operating system.

4)Pressed C to continue using Partition1.

* Caution: a Windows folder already exists that may contain a Windows installation. If you continue the existing installation will be overwritten.

5)Pressed "L" to continue.

Setup deletes existing files, copies new files and then reboots.

Setup returns to a GUI page and starts installing Windows for about 40 minutes.

After install I still have 2 operating systems on 1 Drive!

Please tell me the answer is simple and I have been at this too long to see the obvious!

Totally Frustrated,

John

The old OS isnt present, the boot loader just needs to be modified so that it doesnt point to the "old" location.

To do this right-click on my computer and select properties. Than go to the advanced tab and click on the startup and recovery settings button. On the top of the dialog click on the "edit" button button and it will display your boot loader settings file (boot.ini). You should see 2 items on the list, simply find the one that doesnt exist anymore and remove the line.

Frustration no more 😉

Cheers,

-Erik

What a simple way to alter the boot.ini file. I had to go into DOS from the C prompt in the Restore/Repair mode to delete my erroreous, non-existent Win XP #2. Thanks for the tip.

You didnt have to do that. The boot.ini file is hidden and read-only; if you just view hidden OS files and than remove the read-only attribute from the files you can do it from within windows.

I just outlined the path above because it seems to generally be easier for people to follow these steps...

that may have sorted the booting up issue but this person still has two directories containing win xp files!!

C:\windows and C:\winxp

Format and start again if that is an option!

Why? Just decide what install you care about and delete the other one, and make the corresponding change in the boot.ini file. No reformat / reinstall required!
