I am going back to work tomorrow for the first time since 7/3. I am planning to hand in my 2 week notice.

Well, I have never hand in a 2 week notice.

How should I hand in my 2 week notice?

You should hand in your 2 weeks notice notice with your hand 2 weeks before you head out with your head in your hands.

I've always found the 2 week notice thing a bit funny. The company can escort you out the door at any time, but you need to give a two week notice?

Most companies make it optional. I know my contract said that since Michigan is an "at will" state, both parties should try to give 2 weeks notice but are not required to do so.

You don't need to, there is no law saying you have to. Unless it's in your contract.

I usually make sure I have another job before I turn in a notice, just in case the employer decides they don't want me there for the full two weeks.

I gave 3 weeks because I liked them. If I were disatisfied and didn't care about referrals, I'd leave when I wanted.

You can hand in a 2 weeks notice as courtesy just like a company can let you go on a moment's notice but also give you 2 weeks severance pay.

You don't have to give a 2 weeks notice just like a company doesn't have to give you any kind of severance.

I'm pretty sure that some states have more strict laws about severance pay than others. However, here in AZ it's an at will state and I can be fired without as much as a penny. Of course, I could go in, collect my things and leave without any problems.

It's more like stabbing a pencil with your boss, but just as effective. :)

OP, just out of curiosity, was the two weeks vacation all on paid vacation time you had saved up or did the time away from work just make you realize how much you hated it?

unless you agree to it as part of the terms of your employment, you don't have to give 2 weeks notice. It's considered good etiquette but so is 2 weeks of notice on the corporate side. So really, if you are 100% sure you never wanna work near anyone there, fsck 'em. Leave.

why bother with 2 weeks notice when you're pulling the DB move of quitting the day you get back from vacation? seems like that right there will probably burn any bridges with your boss that giving notice might have saved.

Some companies (especially financial) will accept your 2 weeks notice and then ask you to leave the premises anyway, and still pay you for the two weeks that you were willing to come in.

Write a letter, tell them your last day is Aug X, 08 and freebird for the next two weeks at work.

Is the pencil trick euphemism for the Aristocrats joke?

yes, the two week vacation all on paid vacation time.

I am flipping a coin here. I took 10 vacation off, but by the time I quit in 2 weeks, I only qualify for 7 or 8 vacation days. so I am betting if they will deduct my pay for the 2-3 vacation days I take in advance. if they don't, I profit a few vacation days paid. :)

I don't hate my job, I just don't like it. there is a better opportunity comes up to me. I will be work abroad in London for 1 full year. :)
