i'm looking at 2-way radios, somewhere in the range of $40 - $60 for a pair. i know that motorola and some of the other manufacturers are making radios with an advertized 10 mile range. i don't expect to actually achieve that kind of range, but i do anticipate using it within, say 4 or 5 miles (on car trips and boat rides)

does anyone have any suggestions as to a decent, relatively inexpensive model, preferably advertised as "water resistant"?

i am looking to pick them up in a retail store before this weekend, so names of suggested retailers would be appreciated.

thanks folks.

Just a note, you are supposed to have a GMRS license for longer range radios (anything over 500mw), although most people don't get one...

I have had sucess with THe motorola Talk about + 2 way radios. They are the FRS radios that have a 2 mile range. I use them when going to Killington,VT snowboarding. They work great. I"m sure the other motorolas that are GMRS/FRS will work for you needs.

Also, the range quoted is for use on flat land with no visible obstructions. My dad has had a pair of The first(or maybe 2nd) Generation Motorola TalkAbout+, and those things still work great. They can kill batteries pretty quick, with a weekend of heavey use, but they still sound just as clear as the day we bought them.

SO, i would say get any Motorola, that has privacy sub codes, and maybe a keyguard lock feature, so you dont' accidently change channels.
