2 video card comparison

Would an Evga 7900gs be much faster than my Sapphire X800gto2? Sorry if it's stupid question but I can't keep up with graphics cards and their respective speeds nowadays. Thanks.

It'll probably be faster and might even draw a little bit less power. Also supports SM3 so your 3DMock06 e-peen goes up. I just looked up some benchies and (unless you modded your card for 16 pipes) depending on the game/benchmark performance goes up 30-100%. Also, levels of overclock varies, though both cards seem to overclock well, it seems.

It wont be alot faster but it will be faster. That card is a good overclocker. I personally only think it would be worth it if you overclock the card alot.

Thanks for your replies. Will this card be better in Oblivion? I know that ATI cards do better in outdoor scenes but I have my heart pretty much set on a 7900GS. Thanks again.

You can use the Tom's Hardware interactive VGA Charts with Oblivion as the benchmark you want to test. The GTO is the least speedy of all the X800 cards, although as noted some will unlock more pipes and OC as if they were X800 XL cards. But the 7900 GS, no matter if nVidia design philosophies concentrate on OpenGL, to the detriment of Direct3D, should perform as well as any X800, probably even my X800 XT-PE, in Oblivion.

You can also look at the RAW specifications side by side, at GPU Review, but that's not really a good option unless you know what effect the numbers of pipelines and bandwidth, etc have on performance.

Yes, 7900GS will still beat unlocked X800GTO. Just select X800XL in the chart because essentially that is an unlocked X800GTO in pipelines and clock speeds.

I played some Oblivion today with a 7900GS and it seemed to run pretty good.

The last time I played it was with an X850XT and I can't say I could really tell a difference speedwise although Tom's HWG tells me it should be slower.

Yeah it looks like its just barely faster. Is there a step over the 7900GS that isn't too much more? If no I will still probably pick up the 7900GS.
