2 U.S. jets missing over Scotland

Got this news from CNN. Seems like 2 US jets are missing after a training exercise. Hope they find the pilots.

At least since they are fighters there is a good chance the pilots survived if the planes in fact crashed. I was a bit surprised to see that these were F-15s - in recent years it has been the F-16s that have had a dreadful reliability record and many crashes.

FoxNews said that the jets were on a low level test flying mission in the Scottish Highlands. I guess there's a few reports of vacationers hearing an explosion. That's sad

Just on the curiosity side.
How can they lose 2 of the best fighter planes in the world, and 4 pilots? There should be some kind of radio transmission for help, because it is very unlikely that both planes losses communication instantaneously if there were a collision.
