I recently bought a 19" Sony G400 CRT monitor and I noticed there are two really thin lines across the screen. Can only tell that the lines are there when the background color is white (desktop etc.). Note: I got this monitor on Ubid refurbished but does anyone know what caused this? Appreciate it...

The two thin lines are there because you are have a trinitron picture tube. The trinitron uses a grid of vertical lines to create the picture you see instead of dots like other monitors. The lines are what hold the grid in place

Trinitron® monitors use aperture grill technology, which is a vertical grating. During normal use, the aperture grill distorts with heat buildup due to electrons impinging on the aperture grill. Therefore, one or more horizontal wires (one for 13.9" viewable image size and smaller monitors, two for larger monitors) are strung across the aperture grill, which stabilizes it as it heats up, in order to prevent image distortion. The line that you see is the shadow cast by the horizontal wire.

Although the shadow can be distracting, it is usually not very noticeable, and Trinitron monitors are noted for their exceptional brightness and image sharpness.

For more information, refer to Dell Knowledge Base Article HO1019511 - "Monitor Troubleshooter: Horizontal or Vertical Lines"

<< Description: There Is A Thin Gray Line In Either The Top Or Bottom Section Of A Sony Trinitron Monitor.

Solution:
There is nothing wrong with the monitor, the thin line(s) is normal. The thin line is a shadow cast by the horizontal Aperture Grille Damper wire. The damper wire is used to stabilize the Aperture Grille, which is featured on all Sony Trinitron picture tubes.
The number of damper wires vary according to the size of the monitor. For example, 15" monitors only have one thin line while the 17" and 20" monitors have two thin lines.
Through the adjustment of the brightness and contrast on the monitor, the line(s) may appear less noticeable.
There is a mention of the horizontal Aperture Grille Damper wire in the Sony User's Guide which came with the monitor.

Those are jsut tension wires in the monitor to do what tbalon said. They are normal and I also have them on both of my 21" Sony.

All triniton and trinition like (e.g. Mitsubish DiamonTron) monitors have this/these.
