In for the 100106L - now watch them drop.
Although it wasn't too long ago that I probably paid the $ame amount for a 9600.

How does this card compare to a 7600GT? I'm in CA so I have to pay tax for newegg. If I get a 7600GT from monarch, it'll be about $30 more, BUT, the 7600GT should be cooler/quieter so I may not have to buy an aftermarket cooler, so that'll be $30 saved right there. And the 7600GT doesn't even need a power connector.

Mine actually runs pretty cool and quiet. I no longer have a silent PC, but it's pretty quiet. And I'm not yet running ATI Tools.

As far as I can tell, the card is the same card in all 3, just different package.

100106L RETAIL <- $154AR!
100106SR-RD RETAIL <- $164 AR! OOS.
100106-RD OEM <- Gone?

Are all these the same in terms of specification? I couldn't see the memory speed of the 100106L on newegg.
Thanks,

JJET

They are all the same card. Just different bundles.

I plan on underclocking and dropping that fan speed wayyyyyyy down :p Hopefully there won't be a problem.

7600GT doesn't need external power, based on the reviews at stock it is faster than any stock X8xx series card. A 16 pipe X8xx overclocked to 600/600ish would most likely be faster, but then the 7600 is going to o'c too.

At $189 for the 7600 (and prices will begin to fall immediately), it has to be crowned the new king of midrange cards.

As I said I'm very happy with this card for my PCIe motherboard. Would an X1600Pro 512MB be good for my AGP based system?

Thanks. But I'm sorry, I was not at all clear. I got one of these Sapphire cards for my current primary system, and it's great for the price. And I know the X800GTO will beat the X1600Pro, but is it enough to justify the price difference of the two cards below? And will it really matter given my AGP system is simply running an Athlon XP 2500+? Here's what I'm considering:
Ultimately this system will be primarily used for recording cable shows and burning DVDs (I'm starting to build a third system, an Athlon 64 X2 based system). I do some gaming on the AGP based system, stuff like LOTR: Battle for Middle-earth II, but it seems to me that the XP 2500+ is not going to keep up even with a good GPU.

I'm definately considering the X850XT, but need help. Would this be a big step up from a vanilla GeForce 6800 256MB PCIE? I just want to turn up more details on Oblivion, but if it's a marginal difference, I can wait a few more months.

Thanks in advance!

It probably depends on whether or not your 6800 is unlocked and/or overclocked. If it's not, then the performance is probably the same or less than I had with my 6600GT (AGP) overclocked to 596/1200, which is quite an overclock for that card. I think my best 3DMark05 score was around 3800. With the X850XT I get 6250 in 3DMark05 stock. I'm having a problem overclocking the core over 550 without it locking up, but it still gets about 6600-6700 (I think) at that speed. I know that the number of 3D marks do not perfectly equate to performance in games, but there is quite a performance difference. I've been so busy in school lately that I haven't had much time to game. However, according to reviews it seems that the performance increase is about 20% in games like Doom 3 that favor nvidia and about 50% in games that don't.

I'm pleased with my purchase, and it should hold me for a while (unless there are some awesome deals on Black Friday).

Thanks for the input, kal. I bit the bullet. I hope it fits in the Dimension 9150...

BTW, last day for the rebate for anyone on the fence.

after having this card from newegg for about a month or 2, i've decided that it's okay. nothing more, nothing less.

with high AA and AF everything is great, but the fan is really loud when under load.

i'm thinking of switching to nvidia, mainly becuase i want a quiet card and plus, the catylst driver for ATI SUCKS!

decent card overall. if you can get one for $130-$150 it'll be worth it.

anything over is a waste

No check for me yet. I tried looking up the status at the web-site indicated on the MIR form but got the standard MS page indicating there was a problem with the site/connection, etc.

As I always do...I made a copy of everything to include the envelope showing the postage and addresses just in case there's some issue with the MIR.

I always make a copy of everything as well. I also record the date I mailed it, which was March 15. The rebate form says it will take 12-14 weeks to receive the check, so I should get mine around mid- to late-June.

I've had my card installed since last Friday and it runs Oblivion like a champ. Detail and performance is a decent improvement over my vanilla 6800. Thanks all for the recommendation!

My only complaint is that the card is a little on the noisy side compared to the rest of my 9150 so now I just shut off my box at night. I might look into switching out the VGA HSF to one of the Arctic Cooling models. Anyone know if there is a significant noise reduction?

Thanks!

Perhaps in Plester's dreams, but not in reality, sadly. The 7600GT is about as fast as an X800XL. The X850XT of which, is faster then both. This gap becomes even more obvious when Oblivion, the most demanding game available is benchmarked. Of course, faster performance at $159 is difficult to pass up.

At least with the XT you don't have to put up with the run around of rebates to get a decent price. Of course, if you are willing to put up with rebates the $20 off the card I linked will drop the price of an XT even lower then the cost of a GT.

is this card robust enough to handle the insane resolutions of DELL's 30 inch lcd?

worth it? IMO probably not, that is unless you have slow 6800 issues with Oblivion PC game like I did. Oblivion likes ATI cards. Otherwise ya might as well shoot for an ATI x1800XL or XT.
