2 robberies in 2 nights in my apt building

yesterday a neighbor on my floor got robbed between 7pm-10pm, today another below that unit got robbed between 6-8. i live in a relatively nice neighborhood in Queens NYC and i moved in with my gf about 10 months ago. now esp. with the colder weather we decide to always lock the window to the window fire escape tight shut, since both incidents its believed that the robber came in from the back fire escape (we're in the back of the building, not facing street but backyards of the houses on the street behind)

my gf is totally freaked now. she would hate it if she walks in on a robber or if she walks past robbers while they're working on a neighbor. or what if she's in the shower or in the bathroom and somebody tries to break in.

and seriously, what's with people breaking into apartments? what is this 1980? go rob a bank! go do it Ocean 11 style rob a casino! friggin idiot robbers. :|

too risky. it's easier to rob dumb people.

but how much can you walk away with. this guy who robber my neighbor last night, tried to take the dvd player, and the idiot probably thinks its too much to take and left it in the compactor room.

how much does a dvd player go for (my building is mostly old people they dont use high end systems)... 20 bucks?

Welcome to NYC. It is full of complete asshats like that. Too bad you are not in Texas like me....then I would simply lend you a gun and you could shoot the first idiot to come in your apartment and not have to fear getting thrown in jail.

i would love to get a gun. but then i dont want to use it on my gf during the many heated arguments we have every week

Then why is she your GF? I realize that New Yorkers like to argue but isn't that a bit excessive for a SO?

BTW...I thought you couldn't have a gun leagally in NYC? Can you with a permit? And, if so can you actually use it without getting arrested and being labeled the criminal even though you are just preventing yourself from becoming the victim?

i was kidding.
we argue a lot, and it's more likely she'll use it on me than the other way around, im just saying, that i would like a weapon to protect myself when i walk in to a robbery but i dont like the idea of having it around the house.

Dumb people just don't commonly have desirable items to rob 😛

i dont know. not good with gun laws. but i think you're allowed to carry firearms as long as you get the license (i may be wrong), but if you use it on a robber and kill/hurt the guy, knowing how this is america and people suing people with the most outrageous and unreasonable lawsuits and able to WIN, yeah you may be riught you might end up dropping soaps in the jail shower after they slap you with a manslaughter suit.

Not necesarily, some people have more money than brains.

It's a real pain in the arse to get a handgun permit in NYC, and damn near impossible to get a CCW in NYC unless you're a LEO or ex-LEO.

what's a LEO? maybe i am dumb. hopefully i wont get robbed 🙁

I live right by you on 85th. Where are you located? The same robber(s) probably saw some appealing targets on their way out the first time. It's actually a pretty decent neighborhood, depending on which side of the blvd. you're on. The north side, even being near the projects isn't that bad. There's a very determined older lady on our block that helps run the community watch by running down hookers & following druggies in her car troupe with the ok from the local precinct. It's not perfect, but then what is?
