I wonder about that WS thing too sometimes. I guess at the time it appealed to people who couldn't get their .com/net/org and wanted it. I knew a guy who bought one and was very happy about it at the time. What it probably boiled down to was effective marketing. He seemed worried that someone would go to hisaddress.ws and it'd be someone else's website.
 
I've never liked the .ws, etc. domains. I do like one someone at WHT has for sale though...
