Hello folks. I don't plan to OC (too old and too many kids to do that). I will try to keep it short and sweet:

Bought an e6750.

Forgot that retail CPUs come with a HSF.

Also bought:

This HSF

and this thermal grease.

1) Should I use the stock HSF and return the custom one to Newegg?
2) Both HSFs have a paste on them already. Do I remove it using rubbing alcohol and apply the custom paste or leave it as is and return the paste as well?

Thanks.

If you aren't overclocking the stock cooler is far more than good enough - even if you are overclocking it is pretty decent. So you'll want to return the AC7... as for whether to remove the greese first, I really don't know their return policy so I can't say, hopefully they take it back.

Also yea rubbing alcohol with as high % isopropyl alcohol is best (though 70% works fine), if you decide to remove it. Also if you are gonna be putting on your own paste make sure to clean off the processor itself with a qtip and rubbing alcohol, let it dry quickly, and apply a thin even film (just a very thin even covering) using either a clean credit card or (clean) seran wrap over your hands and use your finger. And when you put the processor back on make sure you dont smudge it all over as you are fastening it on.

Goodluck

I agree with TidusZ that you should stick with the stock HSF.

Arctic Silver site says says you should apply the thermal grease in a narrow line down the center (between the cores) on a dual core CPU (If you're using something like Arctic Silver or ZeroTherm). I've done it that way, based on their advice, for several systems over the past year or so and have had quite good cooling results.

But if you're going to use the stock cooler, no reason not to use the pre-applied grease that comes on it, IMHO.

Thanks for the thoughts. I have requested an RMA on the separate HSF, but am keeping the goop to use on the chip.

If you aren't gonna overclock, send back the TIM, also. For stock speeds, you won't need it, and the stock TIM is more than enough.
