2 Questions...Windows XP Related...

Ok, I just did a fresh install of Win XP on my PC. I have 2 questions that I need some help with. Here goes...

1.) I have my system dual booted with Win98SE. Upon boot-up, it gives me the option to use "Windows XP Home Edition" or "Windows". It also has a 30 second timer in order for me to pick which OS I want to boot with. I want to modify that OS option screen to read "Windows98 SE" instead of just "Windows". I also want to reduce the timer to around 10 seconds. How do I do that?

2.) Once I select my profile in WinXP, it goes into loading my settings and all that jazz. When my desktop appears it starts loading the few programs at startup. The only ones I have loading is Meaya's Ad Pop-Up filter, the "remove hardware safely" program, and Norton Personal Firewall/Anti-Virus 2002. The first two come up immediately, but the Norton programs lag behind. It takes them about 45-60 seconds to load in the system tray. This slows me down a little, but in itself isn't a huge issue. Where this actually bothers me, is that I cannot get online through my DSL dial-up until Norton is loaded up. So basically, every time I log into WinXP, I have to wait a full minute after I am into my desktop area for Norton to load into the system tray before I can get onto the internet or utilize any kind of network connections. It leads me to believe that it isn't necessarily a problem with Norton, but maybe something in the background 'network connection' related. What do you think? Before I formatted and re-installed WinXP, I didn't have this problem so there has to be some way to work around this...I hope.

If anyone could lend a helping hand on these two matters I would really appreciate it. Thanks!

For option 1 right click on my computer and go to Properties. Then choose the advanced tab. Click on Start Up and Recovery. You will be able to choose the amount of time there.

That is the steps to do it in Win2k, but I assume it is the same way in winXP.

To change it to Windows 98 SE, go to start --> Run and type boot.ini. Press enter and you have to edit the boot.ini, but do not make any drastic changes or you may not be able to boot into windows again. Make sure you save after you have changed the name.

I had the same problem with Norton so I uninstalled it because I was sick of the problem. I know use the free antivirus software, AVG 6.0 and I use zone alarm as my Software Firewall.

Wow, I figured it out!!! On a whim, being I hadn't setup my home network so my laptop could access the net through my desktop, I went to Control Panel, Network and Internet Connections, Setup or Change Your Home or Small Office Network. I ran the wizard making my desktop the Pc connected directly to the net, and then made a network disk for my laptop. Now, I haven't connected my laptop to the network yet, I just wanted to try this out and see what happened. When I rebooted...WALLA!!! Norton loaded within 2 seconds of the other 2 programs in the system tray and I was back to normal. If you haven't tried this, give it a go and see if it works for you. Thanks for the help!
