2 Q's: Have you switched cell-phone carriers and how long did it take?

I'm looking to switch cell-phone carriers and I plan on taking my current mobile number with me. What was your experience and how long did it take? I'm not on contract w/ my current provider, so I don't have to worry about a cancellation fee. Thanks in advance

I switched from Sprint to Verizon about a year ago and ported over my number. Only took something like 24 hours. Maybe even less...can't recall exactly. I just know it didn't take long at all.

Can't take your #'s with you in Canada 🙁. Took a few minutes... one angry phone call and one not so angry one.

Nextel to Verizon, this past January. I had already told Nextel to remove NumberGuard from my account; it only took something like 5 minutes for everything else.

I switched from Alltel to Cingular in January and kept my number. My Cingular phone was active right away and it took less than 24 hours for the Alltel phone to deactivate. I never even had to talk to Alltel, Cingular did everything. I was expecting at least one or two glitches, but it was really smooth.

Cingular to Sprint. They couldnt port my number over for some reason. Something about my cingular account being in a different coverage area.

BTW: Who are you switching from? Switching to?

Switched from T-Mobile to Cingular, I ordered online so it took a couple of days for the new phone to be activated (after it arrived), but as soon as it was I was able to make outgoing calls while the incoming ones still went to T-Mobile. A quick call to cingular and 30 seconds later they switched the incoming calls to the new cell phone. Painless procedure.

Thanks for the info everyone

Switching carriers looks like it will take less time than I thought! 😱

Now I just have to choose between Sprint & Verizon.

I'm leaning towards Verizon, but Sprint has a better data plan if I choose a Treo geckojohn! 😕

Maybe this will sway you to the sprint side...

SERO

I got in on this plan and it is fantastic. Let me break it down.

500 Anytime Minutes
Unlimited Mobile to Mobile
Unlimited Picture Mail
Unlimited Nights and Weekends starting at 9pm, $5 upgrade for 7pm
Unlimited AIM and Yahoo usage
And UNLIMITED DATA!

How much... $30 a month. Amazing. If you need a sprint employee email address PM me.

EDIT: You can also move up to a 1250 Minute plan for $50 and there is one higher I don't remember what it was.

EDIT 2: Fix link

Don't cancel your current provider yourself. Have the new provider do this for you. If you don't you may not be able to keep your number. The change was done almost immediately when I did it. It might of been a couple of hours, but nothing substantial.
