My wife wants the Coolpix 2500 for the swivel lens....(she likes taking pics of herself and friends and her current remote controlled cam 'misses' sometimes)

My question is I can buy the canon A60 or the A70 for $82 more. Is it worth it for 1.2MP more?

I don't know if I will print at 8x10 and some have said the A70 is 'soft' compared to the A60....

Thanks for advice....

Å

[edit] price is actually only $82 difference....seems almost a no brainer for the A70....however I am looking into the 'softness' issue.

IIRC the difference between the A70 and A60 is pretty significant, it's not only megapixel difference.

If I can find more details and/or linkage, I'll hook ya up!

Get the A70!

Thanks....I know the movie mode on the A70 is 2x the resolution and the zoom is better.

I am thinking tonight I am going to order it. $216 after a rebate

the 2100 is a given....my wife wants that....

the a70 vs a60 is the choice for me....nikon coolpix 3100 may take a slightly better snapshot, but i'd give up alot of features.

Thanks for hte comparision though, I had no idea the 2100 is movie capable.

went to place my order and it looks like the A70 will be $260 not $216 (the rebate is for a worthless piece of software since I have a photo editing solution (photoshop 6) already)

still $266 vs waiting for the rossman deal at $250 :)

when's that deal coming to a head Ross?

First rule of Ferengi'sm, Ross and head do not co-mingle in the same sentence.

Second rule, Quizno's!

Third rule, wait and keep an eye on my sig.

The difference between the A60 and A70, off the top of my head, is digital zoom(7.5x vs 9.6x max..which you will probably never use), max picture resolution(duh), max video capture resolution(640x480 vs. 320x240).. thats all I can remember, lol.

The A60 actually has a faster continuous drive mode (2.6fps vs 2.2fps), due to the smaller file size..

I like the A60 alot too....I'd buy it if my wife didn't want the coolpix 2500 for herself.

The 8x10 pics I may never do....I don't know....the video I may use though, I have wanted to do some animation and this may be my ticket to learn it (of course 320 res is fine too).

the continuous shot mode I may miss sometimes.

If you didn't get Ross's A60 I'd have liked it :)

The A60 has continuous drive mode.. like I said, it's actually a tad faster than the A70's.

With a fast shutter speed and no flash, I can actually take pictures non-stop until the CF card is full...

Looking through my manual, I can't find any other differences.

The A70 *should* take better pics..

I notice that I lose detail in far off shots. The higher pixel count of the A70 should help with that. Maybe I'll have to wait for a hot deal on an A70, sell my A60 and pick one up. I'm sure it would be a positive upgrade.

For the record I found the G2 Canon is about $60-80 more than the A70 + Battery charger you will need. Now the G2 is a much larger camera, but more capable in some ways (and in some ways inferior). For a point and shoot, way overkill and inpractical....but for a photographer the G2 may offer more flexibility with it's hotshoe for flash alone.

The deal sealer for me on the A70 is not only the $60 or so savings between it and the G2, but also there is a $50 rebate if I purchase a Canon i860/i960 and I wanted a better printer (I have a Epson Stylus 880) and the canon i560/860 were the two I was looking at....now I may upgrade for less cost to the better 6 tank i960.

Charger is $70 with 8 2200mah batteries (of cource there are $25 chargers/4 battery combos out there for less, but I wanted high capacity and quick charging when I need it), the camera came out to be about $265. The G2 (non-refurbished) is around $395 so my cost would have been about $60 more for the G2, but the printer I wanted would be an extra $50 also.

In case anyone is looking FYI.

I hope you got a Maha charger and Powerex batteries. :)

Don't forget a high speed compact flash card. I went with the 256mb Sandisk UltraII 60x for 63$ from Newegg.
