Well i thought a fortron 500 watt psu would be enough for my new system but unforunatley it wasnt. So now i need to know if i should go with something like 1 600 watt ocz powerstream or maybe keep my fortron and buy another 550 watt antec truepower for just the video card. My video card is a BFG 6800 Ultra, when i got it the manual said it needed at least a 480 watt psu. So if i get two i will just use the second one to power the video card.

Are you sure it's not enough? How did you come to that conclusion?

A 500 watt fortron is a monster of a PSU.

I thought it was too until the nvidia power indicator came on and told me my video card wasnt getting sufficient power. A couple people told me they have had problems even with a 550 psu.

If you are willing to spend the money PC Power and Cooling makes a SLI PSU. I guarentee it will be enough for your system.

Did you plug in the seperate molex/PCI-e canblr tht the card needs to run properly? If so, is it on its own rail, or sharing with another component?

Edit: if you have no idea what I am talking abut, look online or see if your card came with an install booklet. Monster cards like the 6800 cannot draw enough power through the AGP/PCI-e slot, so they need an extra connector.

A fortron 500W should power any non-server system.

If you decide to buy an additional power supply, it's going to be irritating hooking two up. You'll have to mod them so they both turn on. I'm running two power supplies, but I have one just doing fan duty and it's an old AT style one, so it has a power on button right on it.

You'd probably be better off just getting one really powerful PSU than trying to do two powersupplies.

RMA the Fortron, don't waste your money on a PSU you don't need.

There is no way that PSU doesn't supply enough power unless it's bad or you have more add-on's than anyone on this board. What is the rest of your system specs?

I'm betting you didn't plug in the molex to the videocard as mentioned above. Same thing happened to me.

P0ldy im positive i got the molex connectors hooked up. If you dont have them hooked up then the you get a loud high pitch alarm sound when you start up your computer. Im actually running very little, just the standard-motherboard, cpu, ram, hd, floppy, dvd drive, and 4 80mm fans. I dont have anything in the pci slots.

Which PSU model do you have? Is it the 460 or the 550? I didn't know there was a 500.

If it's an "older spec" PSU, then most of your wattage is on the 5V instead of the 12V. Even though FSP/SPI makes a better PSU than OCZ, the OCZ may work out for you simply becuase it has > 25A on the 12V rail.

That PSU should have no problems running that system. I ran a 6800GT on a generic 420w for a while so a high quality 500w should be just fine

I was wondering when someone was going to bring that up.

What does the sticker say for your output per rail? Should look like:

+3.3V+5V+12V
34A40A35A

and so on... if you are too weak in one area (as many PSUs are) it can cause undervoltage on that rail, while "technically" the total output power is not being exceeded. It's all about the per rail output, not the total output.

Something's wrong. Either your PSU is faulty, or you hooked the card up wrong somehow. You shouldn't need two PSU's period.

Look at what I'm running off a True550 in my sig. Actually, my GT is at 420/1200 rite now. I'm sure it's pulling more juice then a stock Ultra.

Try switching around the Molex connectors and see if that helps. If not, RMA the PSU for a working one.

You should be able to run that system with a quality 400w + power supply.

If you want to RMA it and sell it to me I will take it off your hands. That Fortron should handle any system beautifully, except for a Gibson...lol

Well I'm glad someone else knows that movie exists! Lines about the Gibson will randomly pop into my head and I can't make them stop - even after all these years.

That's a sweet laptop! It's got a 14.4kbps modem!!!

I'm wondering if the dual rails is actually your achilles heal in your rig. Most 12V rails are just one 12V rail with additional regulation on each rail so if you have to, you could overload one and not the other and still keep on trucking. That's why the spec on the PCP&C dual rail only shows the amperage available of both rails combined.

On the other hand, 15A is more than enough for just a single 6800 and a power hog Prescott on a dual rail PSU. I say RMA the PSU and get an exchange. It's a better PSU than the OCZ.

Well im rmaing my motherboard because its broke. Do you you think the motherboard could be causing the nvidia power indicator to pop up even though it seems like the card is getting powered from the two adapters on it?
