I'm trying out Win2K to see if it is worth upgrading from 98. One problem I have with it is the drag and drop function doesn't work the same way. In 98 if I hold down shift+ctrl while dragging items it would give me a shortcut menu. In 2000 dragging creates no menu and will only move items within the same drive or create a shortcut to the item on another drive. Is this typical of NT systems? Is there a way to change the settings?

Second, how do you change the icons for different file types in Win2K? The File Association dialog lacks the icon button like 98 has.

Also, a little while ago someone asked for sites offering tweaks for XP. Are there similar sites for Win2K and/or will most changes for XP also work in 2000?

Try dragging with the right mouse button.

what exaclty are you looking to tweak in windows 2000?
There's TweakUI out for win2000 and a program called Xsetup that allow you to customise the interface to some degree..

Thanks Tannah. I'll tryout Xsetup (although right now the site keeps crashing my Netscape). I'd like to do all of the tweaks I could in 98 like easily change file icons, get rid of the whole Documents entry in the start menu, move control panel to the top of the start menu, etc.

I was able to do all of those things with X-Setup. I also discovered that the button to change the file icons disappears if you change the associated applications from the MS default. For example, when I changed my text editor to NoteTab the 'advanced' button in Folder Options changed to a reset button, effectively hiding the icon box. To work around it I had to change the default in the dialog boxes without using the change button. That allowed the advanced button to remain.

What's up with that?
