2 players to play online but only 1 Internet connection?

So we are 2 players who need to play online (same game) but we only have one connection.
How to make this work? (Yeah, I suck at networks)

We're on cable with a router to share the connection.

Depends on the game/server but typically: same cable connection = same WAN address = 1 online player at a time ... assuming you're connecting to a game server that authenticates you.

Basically, if you're not able to do it with default settings and trying to connect with both (some servers may accept you both), I can't imagine it to be possible.

Yeah. Tried playing some HL2 DM and CS:S with my bro but only one connection allowed at a time to the servers we tried. Maybe older games wouldn't authenticate like that, but who knows.

You might do a google search on whatever game you're using + "public proxy".
If one existed, and you don't mind using it, that may be a solution.
(That effectively makes the Server see your 2 PCs as being from seperate IP addresses)

If programmers did what they're supposed to, they'd use ip/port# to identify a player -- and this wouldn't be an issue.

Bottom line: if you're just wondering if it will work... try it and see.

edit: tell us the game you're talking about and maybe someone here can confirm that it works or not

Buy another IP address from your cable provider. They charge a few bucks a month for it. I think that works.

Ummmm, I'm not sure why everyone in this thread seems to have problems with this. As long as you have a router to disperse the connection, you should be fine. The router assigns seperate local IP's to each computer. I've never had a problem in the past with using 2 computers in my house/apartment to play online with a friend on an internet server. A friend and I once used to play BF1942 online all the time, with him sitting in the next room, and both of us on my DSL connection. Another friend, member kd2777 here, just played CS:S the other night with his brother and brother-in-law, all on the same DSL connection of his. With all 3 of them at his house, and me at mine, we joined many servers that night playing.

It shouldn't matter what game it is, you just have to have enough licenses for each game you are running to play online. For the one who said he couldn't do this with CS:S with his bro, he probably only had one steam account and was trying to use the same account at the same time. In my friend's case and his two friends, they each had their own steam account that was paid for.

I also don't know why it wouldn't work. The only issues I can think that you might have are either that the firewall in the router might block the traffic you need, so you'd have to open up ports - and you might also get lousy ping times, with two PC's trying to send out lots of little data packets constantly.

But those are two "might's" - they won't necessarily happen.

what is the game? some games you just specify separate ports for each computer, set the router to fwd those ports and viola. other games work without any extra effort. knowing the specific game will help determine what action you need to take. have you already tried with changing anything?

i have a similar/same prob

my brother and i used to be able to play on the server CS (and CSS) before steam, now we cant connect to the same server. one of us would connect to the server w/o a problem, and then the other would fail to connect after 4 retries, like the server wouldnt accept it.

we're on cable

If it doesn't work, it's a fault of the stupid game....or it's some backass way of piracy prevention that wasn't thought through very well.

I know it's a different game, but I've never had any problem having up to 3 other people play MMORPG's together on my network. That's just stupid...

You can play HL2 and CS:S online as long as everyone has different CD-Keys. At school, my roommates and I play CS:S together online all the time. We each have our own copy of HL2 and our own Steam log-ins, but we share the internet connection. It works great since we can yell at each other without mics.

With Blizzard games I have no trouble playing online and even in the same game at a LAN. The only thing you may have to do is configure each game to use a different port.

Pretty sure we played CS:S in the same (online) server too.

All you need to do is hook the two computers up with a router and give them two separate IP addresses. My roomate and I play online ALL THE TIME, and we've never had a problem with this. Same server, different server, whatever, it doesn't matter. As for the games you mentioned, we've played BF1942 and MOH with no problems, as well as RTCW and Enemy territory, BF Vietnam, and on and on. The only problem you may experience is bandwidth issues, depending on your connection.

No, we each own our Steam accounts. I don't see how having a router makes a difference, the server will see the public IP provided by the cable modem. It is the same for both of us, so it seems like it checks if that IP is already in the game and reject if it is.

But I've played online with 2 other roommates through the same router. We each used our own Steam accounts, but we shared the same internet connection. It worked perfectly.
