[Rant]
Most of the people at the company will be going to a conference next week, me included. Now we just got the dressing code for it, and of course people have to dress nicely. No problem with that, I understand that my normal outfit (black jeans, black t-shirt) are not quite suited for the situation.

But... they also warned not to overdress. Not to wear a 3 piece suit. There are only 2 outfits I feel really comfortable in, in my normal outfit, and in a full 3 piece suit. So what if I stand out among the people? What is wrong with that? I think wearing a 2 piece outfit looks almost as silly as people wearing an expensive shirt + jacket over jeans. Either dress casual, or really dress nicely.

What do you people think about it? The ladies seem to appreciate it when you dress in a full suit, rather than looking like some sleazy homeless guy who can't afford more than 2 pieces of the suit...

At least people don't complain when I show up in a Cradle of Filth t-shirt on a regular work day :p

i like 3-pieces, but if they say not to over-dress, then i'd follow the instructions. Do whatever you feel most comfortable in. After all, it's not OUR job that'll be gone if you break the rules.

It's not neat, nor casual. If you are going to dress up half, why not also wear the pants to match them? You're not going to wear a pair of swimming trunks with a winter jacket over it to go to a funeral, it looks dumb.

I am not fond of ties either, but if you dress up you have to do it good. Otherwise you can just as well not bother at all.

I'm not particularly of the "jeans and a jacket" look myself. Something just looks kind of wrong.

i saw Jay Leno wearing a couple of those "jacket and jeans" outfits on his show before. It's certainly no substitute for a suit, but it's more dress than casual khakis and a polo i guess.

*shrugs*

You're getting it! :D

P.S. Just asked about the new dressing rules, and they don't mind me wearing a 3 piece suit, they even presumed I would :) (I did the previous times too)

I only wear 3 pieces in the winter. 2 piece suits for the fall and early spring. carry a sports jacket for the summer.

I can't speak for what is current in the Netherlands, but in the States we (or at least I) tend to think 3-piece suits are rather dated, and associate them with elderly banking dowagers. I enjoy wearing a nice suit, but to me the vest is overkill and actually robs a suit of its elegance.

Do you feel comforatbale with just the vest? I've been to meetings where I was presenting my department info to some veeps and I took the coat off to have more range of motion for my arms.

Some cool looking summer weight suits are 3-piece this year. Maybe the dodgy person who sent out the dress code was afraid of 3-piece suits looking too somber, too much like mortitians or bankers.

As for my personal dress code rant, I always hated the way the @sswipes who didn't dress appropriately at formals in college. If a girl invites me to a sorority formal and spends hundreds on a dress, you'll be damn sure I'm coming in a tuxedo (actually I've owned several since I was 16). I'd see these dorks throw a jacket over some short sleeved shirt, clip-on tie, and jeans. Then they get pissed when their date comments on how good I look and how much I seem to care about looking for my date.

A suit does not make the man, but a good suit accentuates the power of the wearer.
Me, wearing a suit for my friend's medieval period costume wedding - no way in hell am I going to wear tights!
Tips on buying and wearing suits.

I'm with Don Vito on this one. Two piece is the way to dress, and I'm not talking sport jacket over jeans. Three piece is typically an out-dated fashion in most situations, even for bankers.
