yep thats about a quote i got to do flooring...

i'm not locked in on specific woods either, guy said we can go with him to where he buys it and we can pick what woods we want... the labor would be to install, sand, and finish the wood...

if I do this, which btw sounds really cheap... what wood do you recommend? I dont mean color per se, but should i ask for a certain cut of wood... so the planks don't warp, etc... i don't want knots, etc... i don't like too much grain either... to dizzy busy, and i don't like too narror planks.... also makes room too dizzy, but could make room look larger ?

what kind of gloss should I have him use?

Cripes, if you have your choice, I'd take Cherry Tongue and Groove. A satin finish polyurethane would make it look like furniture. High gloss would kick ass, too. I can't believe you can get it for that price.

I say prefinished. Its no wonder they charge that much. Finishing/refinishing is a major PITA.

'Prefinished' can't hold a candle to real wood, especially if you're referring to ' Pergo'. We've been in this house with tongue and groove oak floors for twenty-two years, and the floors still look fine.

You can get prefinished that is solid IIRC.

I think I've seen that, but the stuff I saw was oak, stained really dark, like Spanish/Medeteranian, and had fake pegs in it. I'm pretty sure it was purchased with the finish already on it. If he can get cherry for $4.00 per square foot finished, it's a no-brainer!

I had my living room done last year for $3.20 per square inch that included materials and labor. BTW I am in So Cali if that matters.

You can get just about any type of hardwood prefinished nowadays, the quality of the finish on them is much better then buying unfinished and having them done in your home. The factory finish will be perfectly uniform and most times have protective coatings that are impossible to apply outside of factories. At $4/sqft installed, this is a no brainer though.

NorCal and we paid $3/ft to have our real oak floors refinished last year. So $4.xx for materials and labor including finishing sound very very cheap.

If you don't want grain, then get concrete floors and paint them brown.

That is a deal if you can get clear 3/4 instead of 5/8 tongue & groove. Cherry is nice but it is a relatively softwood & need more refinish than oaks. If I have a choice then I would go with hickory/pecan because it is about the hardest wood that you can get (41% harder than oak & is some what difficult to install).

Maple (12% harder than oak) is another good choice that often use in bowling alley. It doesn't stain evenly, but the natural colour is absolutely beautiful or with Al oxide/ceramic (my brother & I installed 2600 sq/feet at my parents place 7 years ago & it still look good).

We got the prefinished Maple on sales at 50% off. It was $5.00 CAD per sq/foot, or about $3.65 USD sq/foot for clear 3/4 grade no install.

Holy $hit. That's $46,080 for a 10'x10' room.

At first, I said, WFT, he must got his math wrong, then I re-read his statement and it was for per inch... Then I am

I just figured he meant per foot. That's outrageous if it's per inch.

He's getting his choice of real hardwood floor, installed and finished for only $4.00 or so per square foot. I'd say that's a deal!

Polyurethane is pretty generic. I can't imagine one brand being better than another. I'm sure the guy doing the job will have his own preference for conditioner, stain and finish coating.
