heres the deal....i have 2 computers with a crossover cable. The server is win2k3 and then a client computer with internet access. The connection/network works good. But is there a way I can take the clients internet connection and share it with the server?

If you were to do that, then the server would become the client and vica versa..

If you are using xp on the client right click the connection in the network connections folder and goto the advanced tab. Under internet connection sharing select, share my computers internet connection.

There is a network setup wizard that does this for you but that is the simplest way.

You also have to change the network settings on the server (which would become the client) to use the static ip of the computer with the net connection, as the default gateway.

That is all

Thanks...got it to work! But heres the thing...the win2k3 server pc has dns, dchp etc installed...but being this is the client now this is no longer being used. I have a few questions if you know the answer to them.....

1)If I want to "expand the network" and add some pcs to the win2k3 pc...would the dns/dchp servers still work? I would just have to add another nic card and set a static ip for that nic and update the dns/dchp settings to that ip correct?

2)If i add another pc via a nic and not a switch etc. could i get that new pc to gain net accecss? In theory it would be the xp(server)with net access, shared to the win2k3 pc(client a), then another pc(client b) connected to client a, all having internet access.

To answer quesiton one, im not entirely sure what your on about, but dhcp services are designed so that you do not have to set any settings, it sets everything automatically.

you should really disable dhcp and dns on the win2k3 server.

As for question two, the answer is yes, but as far as im aware, the machine with the internet connection has to be the machine with the connections to both computers.

If you have a connection to client 1 & 2 from your xp box, you can "Bind" or "Bridge" the network connections (So they are seen as one), then share the net connection to that single connection :)

As for your way, im not sure what would be involved, you would probably need to setup some major routing...

I would suggest that you pop another NIC into the "server" and connect the internet to *that*. That way the server will be the DHCP server for the network.

Or you could go buy a router (~$50-100), which is the better solution IMHO.
