2 PC network question??

I am trying to connect my new computer running XP home to my wife's labtop running XP home (upgraded from ME). The new desktop has the Asus A7NX8 deluxe Mobo with two onboard LAN ports. I have run the network connection wizard hopeing to network the two PCs and share the DSL connection. I have the desktop connected to the DSL modem with the regular cat5 cable, and to the laptop with a cross-over cable. The Laptop will show it's own SharedDocs folder in My Network Places. The desktop shows nothing in My Network Places, and gives an error that I do not have permission to acess and to contact the admin when I try to view workgroup computers. I have switched ports on the desktop and it makes no difference. The only way the desktop seems to notice the labtop is when I turn off the laptop, the taskbar of the desktop tells me there is an unplugged network connection by showing the two monitor icon with an x. Any help would be appreacated.

Thanks,
BAusten
