2 pc network- one pc much slower on network

Hi, I posted this in networking section, but realized no one goes there much, so i reposted it here...

I just set up a small home network with 2 PCs and a wired router/switch (dlink ebr-2310). the systems are as follows (both xp home):

abit kn8ultra
a64 3800
2 gigs corsair
syskonnect sk-9e21d (nic)

jetway
duron 850
384 pc133
compaq nc3120 fast ethernet nic

---
obviously a big difference between the systems, but I assume with the same OS there should not be too many problems. Anyway, both computers connect to the net ok. The jetway connects to the abit great. The abit takes like 1 minute to access the jetway- that is my problem right there. i tried calling dlink support but obviously this is not a router problem so they refused to help me. Anyway, so how can i correct this problem? any ideas where i should check or what I should do?

Thanks

ummmm.... how much stuff do you have on the duron hard drive that your trying to access? Sometimes if the folder your accessing has TONS of files in it <size doesnt really matter, its number of files>, in my case my NAS which has over 470gigz of anime and Manga roughly 10k files, it can take up to 30 sec for the drive to load up initally. And my NAS is an X2 3800+.

If thats not the issue, then i dunno.

No, it only has about 8 gigs of info. You know, I did choose the folder sharing option, but i am not able to acess the entire hard drive of the other computer- is that how it is supposed to work?

Try pinging both comps and see if there is any discrepancy in times.

If there is no discrepancy then your problem is most likely in the OS configuration.
If there is a discrepancy you likely have another issue.

Are they both using DHCP? Firewalls?

I have had this problem in the past, and I suspect it has something to do with crappy network components. For example, I have a D-Link wireless N PCI card that has a bitch of a time staying connected to the network even when it's 3 feet away, whereas my laptop's wireless can keep a strong connnection from any room in the house.

Try switching network cards and see if that changes anything, even if it's just switching the cards between the 2 computers. You'll quickly know whether or not that was the problem.

he's wired and not on wireless.

Also if your trying to access the C drive, theres sercurity installed in windows to prevent it. You need to designate a share foldier if its your windoows root drive.

Well, i already have folders designated. And it is not that the folders are not accessible, it is that it takes a minute to access them from the good computer to the older one.

Do you have any sort of security, virus or firewall software installed?

Try closing them out and give it a shot.

I forget which program it was (as it came pre-installed on my laptop and is long gone--norton something or other) but it prevented me from connecting to another computer via network--and never told me! I could see the other computers perfectly fine, but connecting was the problem, as was the software.

Anyways, what I'd do is close out every program you do not need via task manager and see if it helps the situation any. If it does, you'd know there is something running that is causing your problem.

rofl maybe the problem is because its a OLD drive 8GB is like.... well :X ? try plugging a new drive in there temp, and access it.

😕

I'll admit those old drives were slow, but they weren't so slow that it took a full minute to access it.

i was about to say, what are the speeds of the Drives. An old 8gig..........figures
Make sure the firewall rules on both are same.

Try the onboard NIC on the ABIT board, instead of whatever card you're using. Even though it's not gigabit, neither is the card on your other PC.

I went into safe mode with networking and the connection worked great... so it is definitely a software problem. Now I have to isolate the problem. It was not the anti virus (Antivir) or the firewall.. I am wondering if it is a service..? I went through most of the "optional" running processes, shutting them down and checking the connection. Any idea of what service could be causing the conflict if it is that..?

I'm a "he" 😛 Buzzsaw is a defragment utility. I did shut that off in processes, but I did not remove as aserice and restart... I wonder if that could interfere..

Check the configuration of the NIC. Make sure it is full duplex and set for the proper speed. I've seen where the autonegotiate caused similar stalls (like you're describing). I'm not sure if safe mode works around this or not...but its worth a try...

I actually tried to put it to both 100 full duplex and 10, but to no avail.

also,as it worked in safe mode with networking, i think that this would indicate it is a software rpoblem of some sort rather than a problem with settings
