Are you saying you want to install drivers into an XP partition while you are logged into another?
I don't know if that is possible!
But, I wonder why you want to do that!
Why not just boot into it and install the drivers?

You can download a driver to any partition you want.
But, when you install a driver, it is installed by the OS and you have no choice to make as far as I know.
Is there a specific driver you are concerned about?

Drivers always install to the Windows partition; you have no choice in the matter. OTOH you are free to store their source installers anywhere you please.

are you saying that when i run the install and it asks me what directory to install it to, if i pick the storage partition, the relevant files are extracted to the C partition?

Im looking now at my E:\NVIDIA\nForceWin2KXP\3.13 :

AudioDrv, Display, GART, MemCtl, data1, data2, layout bin, setup installer, AudioUtl, Ethernet, IDE, SMBus, data1.hdr, ikernel, readme, setup inx file, setup.iss, are all in my E storage partition.

E:\NVIDIA\Win2KXP\66.93 has:

advanced.tv, aliagp, cad.tv, data1, data1.hdr, data2, dcc.tv, default.tv, engine32, finance.tv, dpqvdisp, keystone, layout, modes, nv4_disp, nv4_mini, nv4disp2, nvAppBar, NvApps.xm, nvcod, NvCpl, NvCPL.HL, setup.exe......etc.

you get the idea.

so are the relevant files installed into the C partition regardless of directory that I choose? Everything's working fine so far.

OK, this is why I asked which particular driver ....?
So, I take it you are talking about the NVIDIA graphics card drivers.

When you download the driver, it comes in a compressed format. Before it can be installed, it needs to be uncompressed. When you double click the downloaded file, it gives you the choice to pick where you want the files to be uncompressed to. It may say where you want to install. But, I don't believe anything is installed there. After the files are uncomptressed, it executes the setup file, which installs the driver into the XP partition.

After the installation is complete, you can delete all the uncompressed files and nothing will go wrong. But, you can keep them too.

In some cases, like the audio drivers from Creative labs, for example, in addition to the drivers, there is a program that is included too. Then, you have a choice where to install that program. But, that has nothing to do with the drivers.
