Ok, here's the strange story:
A few months ago, my Com21 Doxport 111 started dying - giving speeds of about 56kbps (that's bits per second; KBps is Kilobytes in my notation). So, we bought a 3Com modem. It worked fine for a month or so, but then it started dropping the connection every few hours, until today when it just refused to work at all. So, I called my ISP, got the MAC ID changed in their systems to allow me to use the "dying" Com21 again. Now according to Bandwidthplace.com, I'm running 100kbps ABOVE my capped speed, which is 800kbps. So there's the weird part of this - dead modem now lives again for no reason at all. It's actually outside its shell now; assuming it to be dead, I opened it up. So now, it's even running without its protective shielding - just a PCB with a few cables to it. Dissa nutsa...
Part II:
I figured I'd look into a firmware upgrade. Found the site for that, hope the link works. Link
In case the link won't work, it says there:
"CABLE OPERATORS ONLY, please contact Com21 Technical Support to obtain the latest version of firmware for the DOXport 101/111.
email: support@com21.com
NOTE: Only cable operators can download firmware into the cable modems. End Users are NOT able to upgrade the firmware in their cable modem, nor do they have visibility into which version is currently running on their modem. End Users requests for cable modem firmware will not be responded to."
So I called up my ISP. They say it's against their company policy to do anything like that. HUH????
So how the heck do I a)find out the firmware version of my modem, and b) actually update it to add whatever bug fixes and such they have for it?
