Global Electric Motorcars, a DaimlerChrysler subsidiary, is offering New Yorkers its two- or four-passenger Neighborhood Electric Vehicle for $2,995, roughly a third the manufacturers suggested retail price.

The special program runs through May 31.

GEMs are classified by the federal government as Low Speed Vehicles (LSV), with a top speed of 25 mph. They are ideal alternatives to full-size automobiles for short trips, as well as a primary people mover on corporate, academic and military campuses, especially ones with both public and private roads between buildings.

New York recently legalized public road use, on roads posted at 35 miles per hour or less, of the GEMs.

Global Electric Motorcars, the largest U.S. producer of street-legal electric vehicles, has been manufacturing the GEM neighborhood electric vehicle since 1998. The GEM is designed for downtown driving, college campuses, office campuses, planned communities, industrial parks, military installations, resorts, and similar localized uses.

A GEM costs pennies per mile to operate and is easily charged by plugging into a standard 110-volt household outlet. GEM complies with all applicable federal safety laws.

Kinda, except it's street legal in places, doors are an option, and it goes 25 mph (don't know top speed for most golf carts, but the ones I've rented on a course don't come close to that!).

Obviously this is for certain situations, not something the majority of people could commute in.

arent tractors street legal too? i recall reading a story about a man driving one several hundred miles from one state to another.

//krunk (^_^x)

we have 4 of these at work. they are street legal for all roads that have minimum speeds at 35 or below. they kick the crap out of our golf carts.

i wish we could get 'em for $3k

It also comes with a free amazing anti theft devices such as:

1. Running up to your vehicle and ripping the thief out of your brand new hippie wagon since it goes so damn slow!

2.People wont steal them because geo metros are just as ugly and can go faster!

3.If you cant chase the culprate down and rip him out of it the batteries will automatically die. Its only made to go 20 feet.

And they didnt even tell you about the insurance. It is only 5 dollars a year, the insurance companies know that if you get in an accident with one of those, YOUR DEAD ANYWAY.

Jk, I cant wait till I see an offroad version of it on ebay 😛

The Straight Story

^ Waaaaaaayyyy too much corn ...

Sooo.... any wagers on how long it will take for these to start appearing in Russia, courtesy of SeaWay transport? 😉

Whenever I buy my next car I'm going to seriously consider the Hybrid cards that have a normal gas motor but also an electric one. The gas mileage they get is just nuts. Usually double a normal car and they go normal speeds and such. I just wish they had a Hybrid SUV. I'd be all over that.

Ford will come out with a hybrid escape suv for 2004. If you can really call that an suv.

You can actually buy hybrid "kits" for your vehicle, though they're expensive as hell but worth it in the long run. If I had the cash I'd probably get one for my '94 Explorer... ahhh, the last years of the vaguely real SUVs.

No, the Escape is not an SUV, it's a Station Wagon that's confused.

And as far as hybrid vehicles go I hear the Honda Civic Hybrid gets 70 miles to the gallon, but more importantly doesn't look f%$#ing weird like all of Honda's previous Hybrids did. I'd buy one, again, if I had the cash.

I just realized, much like those loud 2-stroke scooters, this is just another device for the lazy and pleasantly plump. People, learn to walk, jog, skate and bike.

You hear wrong. So very wrong.
People seem get a little overzealous in their exaggerations about the current state of electric/hybrid cars. The fact is, they are just not terribly improved over "regular" cars yet. This is a very slow moving problem.

<picks up Aug 02 Motor Trend with Honda Civic Vs Toyota Prius article>

2003 Honda Civic Hybrid
EPA mpg, city/hwy: 48/47
Observed results: 39.4 mpg (70? I don't theeeenk so!)

2002 Toyota Prius
EPA mpg, city/hwy: 52/45
Observed results: 41.2 mpg

2002 VW Jetta TDI
Observed results: 42.3 mpg
**Note that this is just a modern diesel...no fancy electric hybrid stuff.

I disagree. I don't think 39 mpg is "just nuts."

See my above response.
