I have exhausted my abilities trying to trouble shoot this problem over the phone ( we live 12 hrs apart)

Thought it was safe mode but he is receiving no message when he boots to that effect

He is getting a runner error about an invalid backweb application id 7288971 at boot up

Nothing in the add remove programs that he can relate to that

Have tried to remove monitor from devise manager and use have disk to specify the monitor.

he has tried different mobo vid card and monitor prior to contacting me.

any info is welcom

Have him uninstall and then reinstall Kodak EasyShare software to get rid of the Backweb Error.

Had not thought of that. I will try that with him over the phone tonight.

I have tried almost everything in another discussion you were leading labeled stuck in safe mode. I have not done the step by step confirmation to see if it is hanging. The only options available in the display settings are 2 or 16 and I think 480 x 640.

Any Idea what would cause a settings change while opening a picture on ebay?

Edit: Looks like the first thing you should try is to have him boot up in real SAFE MODE, then go to Device Manager. Have him click on the Display adapter(s) section. There maybe several display adapters listed there. Have him remove/uninstall EACH one listed. Once he's done, close Device Manager and reboot the pc. See if the color limitation is removed. Windows should redetect his current display adapter and correctly configure it on reboot (reboot to regular mode, not safe mode)

It's important that the above is done in SAFE MODE, because all current and older hardware will be listed in each section in Device Manager, making removal of old and possibly corrupted info easier.

I don't know what the correlation would be offhand, but I would have him do three things:

(Before I get to that, you might want to try the free 30-day GoToMyPC software to investigate this. Beats talking to the folks over the phone when you can actually see and manipulate things on their machine!)

Do an online virus scan: http://housecall-beta.trendmicro.com/en/start_corp.asp

Have him download/install/run Hijackthis.exe http://www.merijn.org/files/hijackthis.zip
and have him copy/paste the results to you in an email. You can post them here then.

Also, have him click Start/Run and type in (without quotes) "dxdiag" and click OK. Then,
have him click the "Display" tab and ensure that DirectDraw Acceleration, Direct3D Acceleration, and AGP Texture Acceleration all show as "Enabled".

Of course, you can do all of this yourself with Gotomypc by seeing his screen and using your mouse and keyboard to do the grunt work.

Also, have him look in Device Manager for any question marks next to devices, etc.

You can have him run the System File Checker in Windows 98, too:

Details here: http://www.helpwithwindows.com/windows98/start-142.html

Sheesh, editing my post before screwed up all my links. Anyway, hope they're good now.

A few things...you can see from Hijackthis that the Kodak EasyShare might not be installed, but the Kodak Picture Transfer software is. Uninstall that.

Also, you've got obvious problems in Device Manager with several devices. What happened there? You said the motherboard itself was replaced? I thought earlier you said it was just a video card.

The dllcmd32 error is part of an Efax program that's installed via the HP Laserjet software, so I assume your Dad has an HP Laserjet. He can reinstall the HP software and that should take care of that.

Did you see my edited post from yesterday about booting in safe mode and deleting all display adapters from device manager that are listed? Read that (my bold edited part in previous post.) Also, while in safe mode, have him delete all the devices that have question marks or exclamation marks, and any sub-devices in those sections. Reboot.

The picture software does not appear in add/remove programs.

Uninstall for kodak software gives error message.

unhandled exception
error # 0x80040705
discription is
String accessed out of bounds setup will now terminate.

As for the mobo
He tried a new video card and mobo and decided to keep them.

I will work on the device manager. The remote software is having problems with his intermittent dial up access.

Tried to un/reinstall efax and it needs 256 colors to reinstall. That can wait...

re: "Uninstall for kodak software gives error message.

That sounds like an "InstallShield" error. Run the InstallShield cleanup utility on his machine:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;290301

See if the Kodak software shows up on the list of available things to uninstall.

Additionally, clear out everything in his c:\Windows\Temp folder. That might be causing an uninstall problem as well.

By the way, just swapping out a motherboard and expecting it to work on a system that already had motherboard drivers installed is problematic, at best.

If he has all of his hardware driver disks, there is a registry key that will, if removed, force Windows to vanquish all old hardware references and redetect all current hardware.
The downside is that it will be asking for a lot of drivers in the process. Most of the time, the drivers are already on your system, but windows is too dumb to realize it. You could point it to either the c:\windows\system folder or the c:\windows folder if it's looking for files it says it doesn't have. Sometimes you have to ping pong between the two folders for the same piece of hardware, as one file might be in c:\windows and one in c:\windows\system, etc.

This registry key is HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Enum

I would export the Enum key first to make a backup for restore if something catastrophic happened.

Anyway, again, deleting that Enum key forces a total redetection of hardware in Windows.

This would assure that his current motherboard hardware is the only thing detected, and that the old stuff is gone.

Of course, rebooting after the deletion of the Enum key is a must.

Make sure he has his motherboard CD ready for installation of MB drivers when Windows comes back up.
