Hi Y'all,
I feel alittle silly asking about this, but I'm just a little confused. I would like to setup on of my home PCs to network to both my router and another PC(laptop actually). Currently there are two NICs in my PC. 1 is adressed 192.168.0.x subnet 255.255.x.0 with DNS and gateway set to work with my router. The other NIC I would like to run through a separate hub to connect to my Laptop. Currently the IP is 192.168.0.y and the Subnet is 255.255.x.0 I have no DNS or Gateway defined. IS THIS THE CORRECT SETUP? I don't need to share internet connection from the laptop, I just want to connect to share files. Any suggestions will help.

Putting 2 NIC's in your machine can be done. But with the way you have the IP addressing, you will run into problems. The one NIC, the one that connects to your router, should be in the following IP range:

192.168.0.x-254
255.255.255.0 Subnet Mask

The other NIC should be in the following range:

192.168.1.x-254
255.255.255.0 Subnet Mask

You should never put two or more NIC's in the same machine on the same logical IP subnet. This shoudl only be done if you want poor man's load balancing. You are better off connecting your laptop to the router, which should have 4 or more Ethernet ports. This will be the better solution for you and you will have the smallest amount of headaches.

Thanks,
I'm out of my house right now, but I willl try that tonight. I would like to have the Laptop run through the router/switch, but the R/S is in another room and I have the hub in my home office. I also have all four R/S ports filled with my other home PCs. My laptop is an old Omnibook which I am using to prctice Linux and, since the dongle cable is so short, I need a hub that is close to the laptop. Like I said, thanks for the ideas. Please keep the ideas coming.

Thanks Shadow,
I switched the settings, but I still have a problem accessing my LAN. What appears to be the problem is this:
When I ping the address of either NIC I get no problem. When I ping the name of my PC it says,"Pinging <PC> (192.168.1.x)" this is not the IP assigned to the NIC which is attached to my router. Could this be the problem? Any suggestions would be great.

Fixed! Thanks!
I actually missed something earlier. My Workgroup was changed with the reinstall. Seems to have fixed the problem.
