2 mystery devices in Vista's device manager

Just installed Vista Home Premium (64-bit) after upgrading my motherboard and CPU. The drivers for everything I can think of are already installed - video, sound, TV tuner, printer, wireless networking, etc. Yet there are still 2 unidentified / uninstalled devices listed in the device manager: 'PCI Input Device' and 'SM Bus Controller'...anybody know what these might actually be?

You need the Chipset drivers for the motherboard you installed.

'PCI Input Device' is just a fancy term for your PCI devices like video card, TV tuner, etc. You don't have to worry about that particular 'unidentified' device. Unless that particular device has a big, yellow exclamation mark, I wouldn't worry about it too much.

It won't have that until he installs it and only if the driver is causing an issue...I would worry about it if the OP wants the system to be complete. what's the point of having the hardware if it's not even installed?

Yup, the chipset drivers are the very first thing to be installed upon the first time Windows loads...before video, before service packs, etc. They provide system stability, as well as enables better or more complete hardware installation.

downloaded and installed the Intel chipset drivers, and that cleared up the 'SM Bus Controler'...'PCI Input Device' is still there, though.

PCI Input Device.....best bet would start in your BIOS and disable anything you are not using, onboard sound, firewire ports, raid and such....my guess is that it is an onboard item that you are overlooking. Maybe that TV tuner card since that could have multiple devices....your going to have to go through each hardware, all we can do is guess on this end.
