To cut it short, I have this HW setup:
#1: HTPC (Radeon HD 3300) + Samsung LE37B650 (TV)
#2: PC (Radeon HD 5870) + Dell U2711 + Samsung LE37B650 (Same as above, used once and again)
I just borrowed a DataColor Spyder3 colorimeter to calibrate my displays and here's what bothers me:
When Calibrated, only minor adjustment was performed for setup #1 (as seen in "before/after" comparison)
When calibrated, quite a substantial adjustment was performed for setup #2, both for Dell and even more so for the Samsung TV.
Problems:
#1: All being said and done, monitor and TV now look the same for the PC (#2). However the HTPC (#1) produces a bit cooler colors on that same TV.
#2: When monitor and TV are used in clone mode, monitor is adjusted to TV's max res 1080p
#3: When monitor and TV are used in clone mode, TV profile (calibrated) doesn't get used. Instead, the monitor's profile is used both for the monitor and the TV, producing much cooler colors on the TV.
#4: I admit I like the cooler colors of the HTPC #1 better. They correspond approximately to color temperature 7200K as adjusted from ATI CCC monitor color settings page on the PC.
Questions (as related to the problems):
#1: How can this be? Either my vision sucks or Spyder3 produces different results for different image sources?!?
#2: I know this is ATI/AMD driver issue, but does anyone have a solution for this?
#3: How can I use clone mode and still have the correct profiles for my displays?
#4: Is my color temp preference stupid? I mean, the 6500K calibrated seems yellowish to me. How do you guys calibrate?
Thanks for any help,
Jure
