OK, getting ready to build a Linux box on an old uATX board with an AGP slot and UDMA/33 capabilities.

(1) Looking for recommendations on a basic AGP video card. Nothing fancy, don't need to run games or anything, but I will be running a good 17" monitor so I would like to be able to run 1024 X 768 resolution at 75Hz minimum.

(2) Will be installing a UDMA/66 HDD, but the board only supports UDMA/33. First of all, since the drive is only 5400RPM, do I even need UDMA/66 capability? Second, if I do need/decide to get a Promise UDMA/66 controller, can Linux recognize and use it?

Thanks in advance.

I'm not a gamer nor am I on the bleeding edge of video cards.

So, let's jump to #2.

ATA66 drives will run just fine at ATA33. This is absolutely NO relationship to spindle speeds (5400RPM, etc.). But, if you really want ATA66, I *think* the Promise card is support in some way. I have no problem running at least ATA33 with my ATA66 hard drive and HighPoint controller in Linux.

#1 - Any supported Matrox card, G200 comes to mind. ATI has alot of supported cards as well, though I would go with a rage IIc based card. Voodoo3's are native to Xfree 4.0.x and have excellent support all around and just in case you do have the urge to frag its already there. :)

#2 - SUOrange answered this question already. :)

Went to the Red Hat support site for HW compatibility, it looks like ATI is supported, as Shuxclams claims -

Red Hat HW Compatibility

MWave has both the RageIIc (3D Charger) and Xpert98, though I am inclined to get the XPert98, simply because the Xpert has 8MB RAM over the RageIIc's 4MB (and it's only $6 more).

MWave ATI Cards

Any opinions?

For video cards any decent ATI or Matrox card will do (get a generation older card though).

As for the ATA33 motherboard, you need to make sure and set the harddrive down to ATA33, this utility can be found on the manufactures webpage. This is fairly important, you will get random disk corruption if you don't set it down to ATA33 if you run it on an ATA33 motherboard.
