Okay, bought a new wrt54GS as the main internet router,
all is well with this unit, via lan and wireless.

ie:
192.168.0.1 Router Gateway
255.255.255.0
...etc
Full DHCP ( PC and Macs connect NAT DHCP )

Now, I have a second older wrt54G router with DD-WRT firmware installed,
and wanted to know if its possible to set this router up as a print server.
and connect the HP printer into the router & have this router communicate
with the wrt54GS (main router ) that everyone on the lan can print, have 4 other computers.

Thanks-

Unless you have a Network ready printer you would need a printer server.

You can configure the second Router as client and plug the printer serevr into it (the printer goes into the printer server).

The printer is HP 5si and its is networking already,
192.168.0.11 is its NAT address...

So, How does one configure the second router wrt54g to be the "print server"

zpro, unless I'm missing something here, you don't need the second router at all. If your HP 5si is already on the network I don't think I see the problem.

the HP 5si, has a nic card, and it connects to the LAN via a cable....
it is also setup 192.168.0.11 for a NAT IP.

Can I plug the HP into the wrt54G?

hence having a second wrt54G laying around I thought I would ask the group, if it can be done,
having the wrt54G act as a print server, and thus connect to the second wrt54GS Router (main unit )
thus, everyone on the networking 4 Computer, and print again to this unit via WIRELESS ?...

Then we can get rid of the cables...

Thanks-

Yes you can. If you just want to use the wrt54G just disable dhcp on it and use it as a switch. That's about all you can do with it. However, you can not configure it as a print server. At least not to my knowledge. That's done on your HP's jetdirect card. The wrt54g can be used as a router if you leave dhcp turned on. Or, as a wireless access point or a switch if you turn off dhcp. But I do not believe you can configure it as a print server. Hope that sheds a little light on it for you. Maybe some more knowledgeable people will jump in here and prove me wrong.

I don't think it can be done with the linksys firmware. However, it can be done with other firmware (dd-wrt). Go to their webpage and read the wiki help. They have good directions to follow.

He already has DD-WRT installed. It pretty simple from that point on -- in the Wireless Basic Settings, set it for wireless client bridged mode, set up the Wireless Security using WPA or better as on the main router, and it'll automatically create a wireless bridge to the main router. Any device on the second router will get an IP from the main router.

Of course, you can take a performance hit in doing this vs. your wired network, but for some uses, this doesn't matter.

Since the printer is Network ready you do not need a printer server.

You can connect the Printer to the Prime Router with a cable. Or you can connect it to the second Router (with a short cable), and configure the second Router (With DD-WRT) to work in client mode (look at the DD-WRT on line manual).
