First question, is it possible to have 2 local area networks installed on one machine? For example a laptop would have one for the static IP based network at home, and one that is set up for DHCP for when it needs to be taken to conferences and such.

The second is more of a quick problem question, has any heard of any issues between NT4 domain controllers and XP clients?

Thanks for any help.

2 lan's on one machine is called "dual hom'ing" and it's when a pc/server/etc acts like a router connecting two (or more) different subnets. I don't think this is what you mean :)

What i think you mean is "alternate configuration" XP has this option (in your network adapter's properties, choose the properties for TCP/IP and choose "alternate configuration")

but there are better solutions. the best, in my mind, is the 'location' service on OS X (i love it on my powerbook) But if you mean only PC: the IBM "access connections" is great on thinkpads, you can tie IE settings, firewall settings, TCP/IP settings, even default printers based on which 'location' you say you're at -but this is found only on thinkpads (got an R51 - love it too!) Dell's use either the intel or 'true-mobile-wireless' tool to set up your 'alternate configs' not as feature rich as the ibm one, but they do what you want (different tcp/ip settings based on a user selectable 'location')

Do you see a pattern? It's that this type of feature is tied with the software of your brand of (wifi) network card. So if you have a linksys pcmcia wireless card, look for a "profiles" tab in the "linksys utility", software, etc.

I had to join about 30 XP Pro pc's to an aging school system before we could update the servers to active directory (legacy software issues that ran on servers, argh). There were no issues in that - other than we had some odd glitches when we updated NT4 to 2003 (ie: we had to remove then re-add a few PCs to the domain, seems like they lost a 'trust' relationship with the server, so a user - who would be totally fine on PC-A would even tho they'd be able to log into "pc-b" they were NOT able to run netlogon scripts, or manualy use/see mapped shares when on PC-B. Lots' of trouble shooting was fruitless, and a simple "remove PC from domain, then readd it to domain" did the trick)
