Major Eliraz Peretz, 31, from Eli, deputy commander of the Golani Brigade's Battalion 12 and Staff Sergeant Ilan Sviatkovsky from Rishon Lezion, were killed in the southern Gaza Strip on Friday evening, the IDF announced several hours after clashes occurred near the town of Khan Younis there.

Peretz's brother Uriel was killed in 1998 in clashes with Hizbullah when the IDF was still deployed in Lebanon. The family has another brother serving in Golani's Battalion 13. The third brother participated in Operation Cast Lead last year.

Another soldier was seriously wounded in the incident and another one was lightly wounded. They were both taken to Soroka Hospital in Beersheba.

The clashes occurred as Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu and an inner circle of his ministers, known as the 'Septet', were meeting in Jerusalem.

The Prime Minister's Office issued a statement on Friday evening saying that Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu "joins in the grief of the families of soldiers who died today protecting the state and hopes for the quick recovery of the soldiers who were wounded.

"This is a hard day for the State of Israel and for the Israel Defense Force," Netanyahu said.

In a hint of warning, the prime minister added "Israel's strong positions against those wishing to harm its civilians and soldiers - are well known."

Peretz and Sviatkovsky were killed when a team of soldiers from Golani's Battalion 12 entered the Strip around 2:40 p.m. after several men were spotted placing what seemed to be explosive devices near the Gaza border fence on Thursday night.

The force was then attacked with mortar shells and gunfire from inside the Strip, as well as an explosive device that went off nearby. In the fire exchange that ensued, at least four Palestinians were killed and several others wounded.

But the soldiers were not killed by the explosive device but by gunfire, when the grenade in one of the soldiers' vests was hit by a Palestinian bullet and exploded on his body.

The military was uncertain whether the incident was a prepared ambush or if the fire exchange began because the soldiers crossed the border fence into Gaza.

The IDF was using helicopters and mortar fire against the Palestinians, who reportedly belong to the Jaljalat, an extremist al-Qaida inspired group. The group is not affiliated with Hamas.

Palestinian sources reported five IDF tanks and two armored bulldozers entering Gaza strip firing shells at targets near the town of Khan Younis. The tanks were still in place firing occasional rounds around midnight Friday.

But later on Friday evening, the Hamas Website said the group's gunmen were involved — a departure from the Islamic terror group's tendency over the past year to avoid confrontation with Israeli forces.

Hamas spokesman Abu Obeida told Hamas radio that IDF forces "fell into an ambush" set by Hamas terrorists east of Khan Younis. He did not elaborate. He said IDF troops entered 500 meters into Gaza "but our men preempted them."

He also said the action was taken in revenge to the killing of Hamas official Mahmoud Al-Mabhouh, which Hamas pinned on Israel.

Islamic Jihad also claimed responsibility for the attack, saying that the attack was intended to kidnap a soldier.

Massive riots in Jerusalem, the West Bank, and Gaza were sparked after Obama essentially legitimized PA rejectionism. Now they think they can instigate a new war because Obama is on their side and says the Jews aren't doing enough to win their affection.

More than 50 wounded, hundreds arrested, 3 Israelis and 10+ Palestinians killed....

Clearly the real issue here is settlements, and not homicidal Palestinians using the settlements as a pretext for war.

Israel has been showing too much restraint. Really, these annoying Palestinian attacks warrant Israeli retaliation. The Palestinians know what can happen if they attack Israel, and yet they continue to do so. It's time for Israel to show these fools what strength really is.

This piece of news actually brightened my day:

http://www.smh.com.au/world/obama-humiliated-netanyahu-at-meeting-20100325-r000.html?autostart=1

Obama clowned Netanyahu. Israel's leash is getting tighter, and that's exactly why I voted (and will continue to vote) for Obama.

Israeli soldiers and inevitable retaliations "brightens" your day?

You are disgusting jpeyton.

The way progressives gush when Israeli soldiers are killed by terrorist Palestinians.

You know how he was killed? A grenade shot into his chest, ripping open his stomach.

And only because Israel used a squad of soldiers to investigate potential combatants, rather than shoot first ask questions later as US and British do in Operation Moshturok.

Shame.

jpeyton has always celebrated the death of soldiers and civilians, while lamenting the deaths of terrorists. He is a terrorist sympathizer after all. Everyone knows this.

Just absolutely disgusting.

Even chomsky doesn't go so far as to romanticize the DEATHS of Israelis.

Progressivism is dead. How can any liberal who champions human rights lobby against the most progressive and modern state in the middle east, while victimizing fascist Palestinians, terrorists, and Jew and gay-hating Hezbollah?

It is absolutely criminal. They should be deported to the Gaza strip where they belong.

Actually, if you read my post, I said that Netanyahu getting clowned brightened my day.

See that cursor on your screen? Move it over the link I posted, then left-click, and read the subsequent story that pops up on your screen. See how the words on your screen describe Netanyahu getting humiliated, and don't say anything about soldiers getting killed?

How many American soldiers has Bush gotten killed in Iraq for WMDs that didn't exist?

Yeah, different subject. I admit it.

Yeah, Obama behaving like a child towards an historic ally and kissing up to our enemies and treating them like allies "makes your day."

And I'm sure in side you are gushing over the latest murder of Israeli soldiers. Perhaps hoping it will lead to a 3rd intifada, so you can exploit the Palestinians for your typical progressive boycotts and shill leftist protests.

Please move to the Gaza strip. Take Obama with you.

Yeah, different subject. I admit it.

you mean how many American soldiers killed by Saudi foreign fighters supported by US-backed petrodollars?

If you didn't know, Obama has accelerated the Afghanistan War and the Iraq War isn't going to end any time soon.

A change of subject yes, but it seems progressive criticism of the wars was only dependent on Bush's tenure.

Now that he is out and the One is in, they are silent.

God forbid they criticize the wicked and vile Islamic trolls that behead Iraqis and American soldiers.

It does, actually.

I'm hanging streamers and balloons as we speak. Party is tonight, and you're invited.

Please move to the Gaza strip. Take Obama with you.
Maybe when Rush moves to Costa Rica.

Don't worry Israel is slowly but surely taking care of the muslim problem...
How exactly is Israel addressing the billion plus Muslims outside of Palestine?

Gee, I wonder how many threads there would every time a Palestinian is killed. Death on either sides is tragic because its usually the younger ones.

So, uhh, Israeli soldiers killed during the Bush presidency must have been Bush's fault, right?

Israel is obviously entirely blameless for everything that's ever happened to them, of course... God's Chosen and all that...

Did you not read the thread?

Obama emboldened the Palestinian Authority. Riots were pre-planned as always (there are no accidents in Israel), and all they needed was a pretext to do it. Obama's one-sided "criticism" empowered the Palestinian Authority to turn the other way as Hamas-sponsored clerics preach anti-Jewish propaganda and call for Palestinians to "protect" the Muslim holy sites from those Jews.

In the past these sorts of calls typically ended with hundreds of Jews being massacred. Today a couple soldiers are shot and more Palestinians end up dying in return fire, but 100 years go it would be a blood bath.

Obama demanded Israel freeze settlement construction in the West Bank which it largely did, and now the administration is basically paying lip-service to the PA.

When Biden visited Jerusalem, the Palestinian Authority was busy naming a school and building a memorial for Dalal Mughrabi. Biden and Obama did not find that "humiliating" nor insulting, even though Mughrabi murdered more than 30 Israelis and 1 American.

In fact Obama administration rewarded the Palestinians by doubling their their humanitarian contribution.

I guess rejectionism pays off.

Obama makes obscene demands of an historic ally, while he rewards our enemies with lavish gifts and appeasement. I have yet to see him condemn or criticize any of our enemies in such a manner.

Am I the only one who is bothered by this?

So, uhh, Israeli soldiers killed during the Bush presidency must have been Bush's fault, right?

Bush never empowered the Palestinian Authority or rewarded them for rejectionism.

Israel is obviously entirely blameless for everything that's ever happened to them, of course... God's Chosen and all that...

go fuck yourself. homicidal Muslims murdered 2 Israeli soldiers. They're going to have a celebration most likely. Probably name a school after the killers. EU will grant another billion for whatever damage is done to Gaza when Israel launches reprisals.

It seems progressives hold the chosen people (Palestinians) to obscenely low standard, where they can murder and kill there way through bogus peace process.

No worries though, the Leftists worship violence and terrorism. Explains their absence in the Islamic apartheid states, where minorities don't blow up their children because they are "oppressed."

Trolls.

Hey IHateArabs, I must have missed the thread where you cried crocodile tears about another IDF soldier getting killed within the past week:

Israeli killed by 'friendly fire'

An Israeli has been killed by his own forces in a border incident in which three Palestinians illegally crossing the border from Gaza were seized.

The Israeli army said the Palestinians were unarmed and thought to be looking for work when they were stopped.

A second Israeli army unit arrived and opened fire, mistaking the first unit for the Palestinian suspects.

Tensions have risen in the region despite US efforts to revive stalled Israeli-Palestinian peace talks.

Israeli media reported that the soldier killed was a member of a tank crew who had left their vehicle to approach the Gaza border near Kissufim to detain the Palestinians.

A patrol from another unit arrived on the scene and opened fire by mistake.

The Israeli military is investigating the incident.

Surely, the most moral army in the world would triple-check their targets to make sure that unarmed civilians, or their fellow soldiers weren't in the cross-hairs...
