Currently I have a horrible Volcano 5 on my cpu which pretty much sucks. I just bought a new case, and I was wondering about a HSF. I got a Vantec CCK-6035D($20) from a local shop(it;s all they had), I was wondering what you guys thought of this HSF. I've read some reviews online but they only show results from like overclocked Durons and stuff like that(although all the reviews were positive). I have a 1.4 T-Bird, will this HSF be sufficient, and maybe allow for some overclocking? Also, should I use the 3 or 4 pin connector? It can do both.

Secondly, it came with some sort of thermal paste, the store does not carry AS, so I was wondering is it worth using this stuff, and can you direct me to any sites which show in detail how to apply it?

Thanks as always folks. :)

The vantec don't look too bad by the reviews. But i don't think i would try too much overclocking
with that thing on a 1.4 T bird. It would get pretty warm. Heres a address to a site i looked at
http://www.overclockers.com/articles435/.
As for the compound if your not sure what it is and your going to overclock i would get some asII.
All you got to do is put a thin coat on the processor die.
The more is not merrier in this situation. If you put too much on it , it will ooze out on to the rest of the processor
and make a mess and not too mention possibly get on the bridges and short out and fry your t bird.
Well i hope this helps. :)

I agree, a decent HSF, but limited possibly limited OC potential. Forget about the HSF and keep an eye on your cpu temps, that's what really counts. AS2 is superior to thermal paste and ANTHING'S better than thermal pads. It's a no brain regardless if you push your cpu's limits.

I not familiar with the fan one that HS. If it's pretty much standard CFMs, you can use the 3pin on your mobo. However, if it draws above average amps for that size, definetly use the 4 pin adapter so you don't strain your mobo. If you don't care about monitoring your fan's RPMs, use the 4 pin adapter so you can tap in directly to your power supply.

AS2 is sold everywhere online, but if that;'s all your getting, S/H will suck. Antec now makes a similiar compound called Reference. I picked some up at BestBuy, but I've seen it at CompUSA (yuck) too. I've used it on 2 computers and it works just as well.

If your thinking about upgrading, here's a good review on 46 HSF on TomsHardware
Good luck.

Antec Stats
Thermal Conductivity: 8.2 W/m K
- Thermal Resistance: 0.0022 C/W
- Negligible electrical conductivity
- Made with 99% pure micronized silver
- 75% to 80% silver content by weight

Dont listen to them...I had a vantec 6035d with a 1.4 tbird and overclocked it to 1644 mhz and my full load was in the mid 40's. Make sure you use ASII or ASIII.
The only reason i replaced it with a millenium glaciator was because it was quite noisy.

I think you misunderstood my opinion. I said to "keep an eye on temps, that's what really counts". You may be getting 40's, but if you were to take a group of people and matched them with exactly the same hardware, you'd see different results. Yes a pattern, but still different results.

I still say stick with what you have and look at the temps as the true measure of need.

Reading up on the Arctic Silver 3, it sounds like it is far better than even AS2, and helps keep stuff cool. Since it's the same price, I would certainly invest in some of that.

For heatsinks, I don't have much personal experience, but all the reviews I have read for Vantec and Alpha's have been rated them very highly. Might check up on them and see.

Well I don't have access to any store around here which sells ASII/III, I have never checked Staples but I highly doubt i need to. This thermal goop is better than nothing, I really don't want to make an order to NewEgg or someplace just for a $7 tube of goop that I'll probably use maybe three times total so they can charge me at least 50% more for S/h. I don't know...argh, I wish I'd have ordered some before. :disgust:

Last question:

If I waited til next time I ordered from NewEgg to buy some AS3, would I be better off not using any of this generic goop and just wait for the AS? Or should I apply some of this crap now and then wipe it off when I get AS? Is there any HARM in not using a thermal compound? Obviously I won't try to jack up the clock speed too much but will it HURT?

Nothing--Thermal Pads--Thermal Grease (goop)--AS (I/II/III).

That's the order from bad to good applications. Using nothing is NOT an option with your chip. It's just to hot. I would use the grease for now and switch whenever you can get your hands on some AS II/III. You may still get very good temps with the grease! Remember it's the TEMP that counts and some people see less temp drops than others with AS (though some of this may have to do with the way it is applied).

And NO, it will not hurt or result in anything negative by applying grease now, and removing it later to apply AS. Just follow the AS instructions on cleaning and apply when the time comes. Good luck.
