2 HDDs reformatted with fat32 on 2k sys - now freak out on other comp - geometry?

This is a pretty weird prob.

I am building a Duron 1Ghz system (using KLE133 chipset - VIAs answer to i810 chipset)

This exact same thing happened on a Maxtor 60G and then a Maxtor 40G HDD

I fdisk and format (fat32) the drive using a win98 startup disk. I then move the drive to my personal Win2k system (XP1800+ on 8k7ka+RAID)

2k sees that the drive is connected, but it does not see that it is formatted.

so I use disk admin to partition (50%/50%) the drive and format the drive.

I then transfer the 98 setup files and drivers (using 2k still), etc to the HDD for quick setup.

When I put the HDD back in the Duron system and try and boot off the win98 startup disk, the system will not even boot off a floppy. The system HDD light comes on and it looks like the HDD is going crazy - like flickering super fast, drive clicking away - but the system is basically hung.

Now - this happens when I try and boot off a FDD, so it really has not even read anything off the HDD at the point it freaks out.

The only thing I wonder is if the two systems are trying to see the drive using different geometry or something - but both systems are set to "AUTO" for the IDE setup.

I really need to get this system built, but the HDDs seem unrecoverable for the Duron PC (they still work on the 2k box).

Any ideas here?

All of this hardware is made in 2002 - so I dont see how there could be incompatibilities (both drives are ATA 100, not 133)

Help 🙂
