Was helping a friend install a new 200gb seagate. He has a master 40gb IDE Maxtor, and he's putting the Seagate as a slave on the same ide cable. The maxtor is inside his Dell computer and i can't remove it due to the poor construction of the case to check what the jumpers ought to be. I can only change the jumpers.

Can anyone tell me what jumper settings I should have set?

Try going to their site LINK. Better identify which Maxtor HD he has first. There are several diagrams ofr diff models.

Use aida32 (free downloadable proggie) if you don't which model he has.

Dell's known for using Cable Select, so you could set the new Seagate to CS and try it like that, if you want to take an educated guess.

Good idea on the cable select. Give ita try. When using cable select, the drive at the end of the cable will always be master and the one on the middle will always be slave.
