2 girls died just 3 blocks from my house today... :>(

We've been having some heavy rain last night and this morning. Apparently the underpass by my house filled up with water. The 2 girls must have not realized how deep it was. When flooded to its capacity its about 18 feet deep! :Q They drove right into it as they were exiting the freeway. Car stalled. They tried to climb out the back but were unable to get out. The drowned in their SUV in the back seats.

Story with pic of where they drowned.

EDIT: Looks like one was in her late teens the other in her early 20's.

a while ago, i saw a pic of a woman who drove her SUV right into a swimming pool... maybe its the same person?

i heard about the deaths on the radio this morning. that's where the feeder goes under the railroad tracks. i wonder if they'd ever driven through there before. of course, the water was probably most of the way up to the tracks, so just looking should have told them.

Thats exactly where they drowned. It happenned at night, so with the hard rain, slick surface, poor visibility and how difficult it is to guage depth of water at night especially when traveling at 40 mph while exiting the freeway probably didn't give them much of a chance to stop.

It's pretty bad all the way up here in The Woodlands. My wife works in Huntsville and says the sky is about 80% black right now.

It's a shame, but you have to wonder why they tried to drive that. If they had been there before, they might've known how the dip is.

Man, that truly sucks. But how can one not get out of the car. I mean even at the very end, once the water pressure's equalized you should be able to open the door. Doesn't sound like seatbelt being stuck were an issue as they climbed into the back seat.

Still, what a tragedy.

Probably panicking and not thinking clearly enough to just calm down and get out.

I live in the mountains and so we have occaisonal flash flood problems. People are repeatedly warned about driving through the water, yet still do so. We consider them extreme dumb@sses. The police are giving out very expensive traffic tickets for it.

This, however, looks completely different. At night time, during a storm, they may not have even been able to see that there was standing water. This looks like the fault of the DOT and local officials. The flooding problem at that area needs to be corrected.

Is this portion of road brand new? Has this place flooded b4? If not, what has now happened to cause it (surely it has rained hard in this area b4)

Panic is what's said to kill you if you're in a car that's sinking in water. Rightfully so though.. if water's pouring into your car and your doors aren't opening, the last thing you're probably thinking is "ok I have to wait for my car to be completely under water before I can open the doors."

Yep...

Some simple knowledge would have saved them. That's another aspect of the tragedy.. it could have been so easily prevented.

I thought I saw somwhere that the best and easiest thing to do is get the doors open immediately upon submersion
