2 GHz PC + matlab > 1980s cray supercomputer

OS

My prof mentioned that he had access to a Cray XMP super computer while he was working at General Dynamics in the 1980s and says a 2 ghz pc with matlab would school it.

It's something I've pretty much suspected but interesting to have someone in the know tell it straight up.

exactly what we'll be saying about our piddling 3.06ghz cpus 20 years from now when our 40ghz 25,000+ athlons are pwning 😀

Actually, a desktop in 1998 would school a supercomputer built in 1989 by a factor of two, cost far, far less, and had graphics.
