The regular offer at Audible.com is 50% off your first month membership fee.

Through this special offer (appeared in a microsoft pocket pc newsletter couple months ago, but still valid), you get your first month free.

Select the premium membership, and get 2 audio book completely free. You can cancel right after you have downloaded the two audio books. (that's what I did). There are lots and lots of good books worth checking out. Audio books are great when you are commuting to work or school.

however, do note this:
*This free one-month trial offer is limited to one per household. If you have previously taken advantage of this offer, you will be charged for your first month of membership.

Audible.com special 1 month free offer.

I've been a subscriber for a number of months, and am THRILLED with Audible. I love listening to books in the car.

Audible's customer service is awesome!! The CSR's have been given a lot of liberty to award extra books. Nicely asking in the context of redeeming one special or another is sometimes all it takes. This is likely a large portion of the reason that I'm so thrilled with their service.

I take the downloaded books, convert them to regular mp3, and can get close to 50 hrs worth on a single CD-R. (My MP3 player is a cd based model (Rio Volt) and it doesn't play their .aa format) They have a slightly annoying proprietary format that the downloaded audio files come in (I think that their 'level 4' (the best) is just a modified mp3). As such there is a little bit of time associated in the conversion process. Or alternatively, you can buy an I-pod which will play the aa format - no conversion required. I've also heard of a inexpensive FM transmitter/antenna for the I-pod that lets you play the book through your car radio. It?s called the I-trip, and while I haven't personally tried it, it looks very slick. I've heard that Audible's Otis player is really only good for spoken-word quality, and is unsuitable if you want to try to play music on it as well - otherwise I understand that it works great for the books, and that the price is right - free with a one year subscription.

If you want info on converting the .aa files to .mp3, do a Google search for "aa audible convert mp3" and you'll get some sites for sonicspot or mp3machine that have discussions about converting these files. Don't bother asking audible themselves about the conversion, apparently part of the terms of many of the licenses that they have on the content involves it being distributed in this proprietary format.

Finally, if you sign up and stay a member for 3 months, the person that referred you (if there is one) will get a credit of two free books. So.....if, at sign up time, you put me down as your referral (nosliwde99) I'll see to it that one of those two credits gets TRANSFERRED TO YOUR ACCOUNT. Feel free to put me down even if you plan on canceling the account during the first month.

This is hot because I finally found a use for the .aa files that I got for free from them months ago. Thanks.

I did this, got my 2 books, and cancelled. Then they asked me if I wanted one more month at half price ($9.95). I said yes. That's 4 books for $9.95!!!

Yes. The built in software (Audible Manager) will let you easily burn these to regular audio CD as a CD-R.

If you want to go to mp3 then you'll need Goldwave and an older version of the Audible Manager . Follow the "definitive guide" at the bottom of this page. (long post-but worth printing/reading all the details first)

Call them. Typically very nice CSRs. (yes - occasional exception). Calling them to sign up is potentially best as well. You can ask them straight-up if there is anything they can do to sweeten the deal (beyond the one free month), and often they will throw in an extra book or two.

I love Audible!

I convert the files to regular MP3 and transfer them to my Nomad Zen (not one of their "supported" players). I have like 15 Audio books on ther in addition to my music. Makes commuting go by almost too fast!
