Thanks, Gary!

BTW, unknowingly I'd submitted an already taken domain name (long story) on Wednesday when I signed up for the 2-for-1 and submitted a domain name registration (with the already taken name). The helpdesk asked if I wanted a refund or to pick a different name - I chose a different name but have not heard back on the new name (ticket on helpdesk is in 'hold' status). Any idea how long it would take to correct the situation?

Thanks again,
wumpus....

Gary,

Other than Squirrel Mail what are some other WEB E-MAIL options? Ideally I want something like Yahoo's e-mail system.

Gary,

Other than Squirrel Mail what are some other WEB E-MAIL options? Ideally I want something like Yahoo's e-mail system.

I'm only familiar with imp and squirrelmail and Neomail (which I believe is no longer in active development) so I'm probably not the best person to ask, I'd ask around on our forums or perhaps on someplace like webhostingtalk.com where there's a lotta hosts and users hanging out who are surely gonna have many opinions on things like webmail.

BTW, unknowingly I'd submitted an already taken domain name (long story) on Wednesday when I signed up for the 2-for-1 and submitted a domain name registration (with the already taken name). Happens fairly often our domain looker-upper has gotten flakey lately, starting New Years we're switching to the Registry Rocket setup at Enom and that'll allow much more reliable domain registrations starting in the New Year.

lol you guys that complain should start up your own business like mr dixiesys, charge less, and work long crappy hours babysitting servers and replying to whiney customers. Been there and done that back in 94 and up. At least we got paid decent to put up with all the crap.. lol..

hard worker mr dixiesys is, or just insane. I can't imagine he's driving the same car as mr anand with those kinda profit margins eh?

i give him props for the hard work, i've been there before. But instead of complaining, why don't you get off ur cheap butts and do something better. You'll realize quickly the economics barely justify what you are getting. And then you'll be on the same end of the stick as mr dixiesys when your upstream goes down, or a nice rackmount expensive server goes belly up (i've got a nice $10K dell thats been gutted by dell support about 10 times so far in the past 6 months for total failure, guess i got a lemon).

seriously, from personal experience, this guys working his arse off to make little somethin', and i doubt at those margins he'll retire a millionnare, do the math, if it was so easy and so profitable, wouldn't every one of us do it? Most everyone on this forum could setup (cobalt, plesk, etc) servers and throw them in a colo, but there's a lot more to it than that.

i've got 3 datacenters to my disposal (Class A), and could easily do the same thing, but quite honestly, just aint worth the hassle even at twice the rate dixiesys is charging. lol you guys crack me up sometime..

How long does it take to register a domain? I don't have a domain name but I'm considering getting in on this...

Is it instant once I sign up on godaddy or something?

...Besides, for my money, DixieSys ROCKS! I've been with them for a year now, and never a real problem (a couple of minor wrinkles, but nothing big).

Ok, I'll toss my two cents worth in here. I have been a customer of Dixie since April. I host two sites there. One is my personal site for mostly family. The other is for a non-profit org of sorts. While I have not had 100% uptime, I have only noticed one instance of downtime taht affected me and that was when I just happened to try to update the site while a server was down. Funny part was, it was my fault. I had been notified of the outage, and just didn't read the message through. It was also at about 1am one morning... I have the more important of my two sites on Gay's old $40 plan. If I needed more uptime, I could pay more for that extra .5-1% uptime elsewhere, but for what I need, Dixie has been perfect. Any requests/question I have made were answered in an hour or two. Strange thing about uptime guarantees, they cost more. I don't need them, so I don't pay for them. On the other hand, with the 99% uptime I have had, I believe I have gotten hosting at an extreme bargain. Then again, just my opinion.

when are the darn backups gonna work? I was promised this months ago. Each time i try a backup
it allows me to download the tar which turns out to be 0K and then sends me an email saying
SUCCESS! Please fix this already. I'm on www16. As of now the only way to create a backup is to
ftp hundreds of megs of small files ~ fun! And the fact that the admin console times out every 2 requests
really annoys me. You can check your logs on https://208.251.150.129 to see it. :(

Suggestion: How about not packing us soOO densely on them servers...
Thanks.

murphy55d - Maybe someone else can verify this for me but I believe you can purchase a Dixiesys webhosting plan without providing a domain name right away. As far as domain registar's I highly recommend NameCheap.com/ for only $8.88/yr they've been awesome. Go ahead and buy a Dixiesys hosting plan TODAY before the 2 for 1 special runs out, and worry about a domain name after you're done celebrating the New Year!

slycat - You get what you pay for, if you can afford more there are dozens of other webhosts which would be more than happy to take your business.

But bang for your buck it's hard to match the service which Gary provides, their forums are especially friendly and helpful, what do you expect for $20/yr?

How about he buys more servers so there aren't that many users per server? How about he buys tons more equipment so the 99% uptime goes to 99.999%? How about he does all this, gets everything you'd expect from an expensive hosting service, but keeps it at $20/year? Yeah, that sounds reasonable, dontcha think? As soon as we all learn the magic little secret for pulling money out of thin air, I think he'll get right on it.

I really can't believe people can't keep this in perspective.

On a side note, the daily backups that Dixiesys does work fine for me and have saved me a lot of time in transferring/restoring files. I haven't done any on my own, but since they do it daily anyhow, I really don't need to.

I didn't see an option to choose between doubling the quota and 2-plans-for-1 when I signed up.
Did I miss it?

rossman and wiseoldman - if you go to the link dixiesys provided a couple posts up, you can link to the countdown timer for when this ends. i'm still seeing 4 hours left.

i agree that generally the service and uptime is fine and that the forums are a good place for info.

i do have some problems with the support team saying they don't support certain things like squirrelmail, when it came pre-installed. in my mind, that means you should support it. you acknowledge that it's a site for hobbyists and other people who one could safely assume are not professionals. so that means that some things to get people up and running need to be supported. i am offering to help with compile the faq from answers in the forum, or something else that doesn't require expertise.

when you go to sign up it will ask for 2 domains, if you only list one I believe it doubles your disc space and traffic quotas

I too did not see an option for making a choice when signing up earlier today.

if you go to
this page, at the very bottom of the page, it says If you want to host 2 sites then enter the second domain
below otherwise your first domain will have it's space,
bandwidth, and email allotment doubled.

That's where you enter the 2d domain. otherwise the domain listed above that quote is doubled.

I think I also read somewhere that if you want to use 2 domains but don't have 2 yet, you can enter something else there - unfortunately I forget what that term was, maybe check out their forums or IRC (see their forum for link)- that e basically tells them a 2d domain will be registered and coming later.

hope this helps :D

this is from a couple pages back in this thread if you want to read it in context

I ordered last night, and due to my domain issues as of right now, I put "TBA Later" or something close for now.

I think I've cleared it up, so what do I do now? Since I'm on pending I guess, does it mean I just tell em I have the domain now? Or do they give me some kind of info where I can login and then put my own domain there? I'm lost.. x_X
