I know they don't exist. This was in reference to Top Gun which they purposely changed the identity of the F-5 to Mig 28.

Ah, I see what you're talking about now. Those weren't F-5's though, they were T-38's.

no, they were F5s. The T-38 is the two-seat trainer verison.

The Phoenix missle isn't very good against fighters, it was made to take bombers out at long range.

The f-5 tigersharks are pretty ancient aircrafts, made to dominate those small, twisting dogfights. The f-14 was developed with the first long range bvr missiles, and of course had aim-7, and later on, early versions of the aim9 missiles. So yeah, once the aircrafts get too close, the superior maneuverability of the f-5 will destroy the f-14, but at far distances, the f-14 was developed to house a huge radar and get the first initial lock. The US has been following this doctrine ever since.

As much as I love the Tomcat there's just no way 2 of them can defeat 5 F-5's. 2 vs 3 maybe if they're really good but not 5.

No way dude!
You can do a flyby of your carrier and take one of them out, so you're down to 4. The other 3 will fall prey to your rapid pitch-up and stall technique, and the last one you can fly inverted above his cockpit and give him the finger, eliminating him.
