Okay, here's the scoop:

I have two DVD drives in one case

First drive is a CD-RW + DVD

Second drive is a DVD +/-R

Connecting them to the same ribbion to the same controller, none of them are available in windows.
(Switching from Primary/secondary or CS doesn't matter)

Unplugging one and leaving the other obviously works.

(Excuse the ignorance, I've been away from the end user hardware scene for quite a while.)

Why don't these drives work when they're on the same controller?

Did you make sure the jumper settings were correct? One set to master, other set to slave?

Does the BIOS see them when they're both attached? It may be a motherboard/BIOS issue if not. You might also have a bad cable. Or it could just be that one or both of your drives don't like running as a slave device. It would help if you specified what *any* of your hardware actually was.

But it *should* work; I've been running like this for quite a while.

Out of curiosity, what brand are the drives? And which manufacturer? No PSU issues too, right? Do the drives work as slaves on the other channel?

There's no reason why that setup wouldn't work with normally functioning hardware. You'll just have to hunt down what's configured wrong or what's defective.

I'll have to double check the BIOS again, but here are the specs:

Drive 1: LG GCC-4520B CD-RW/DVD-ROM 52x24x52x

Drive 2: Sony DVD-RW DW-U18A

I've double checked the manual for drive 1 and it does mention that (at least) this drive can be connected to a second unit.

I'm going to try it again and see what happens. ( I can't believe something this simple can be so difficult)

Thanks in advance for your help.

I ran out of time last night, but I'll try that and let you know.

Try switching the drives configuration so that the one which is presently master, set to slave and the other from slave to master.
Some drives just don't like being set as slave.
