I am totally new to networking, I have 2 computers and want to network them so I can whoop my sons ass at UT and other games. What do I need to get, going to a show tommorow so I hope to open up that can of whoop ass on the kid as soon as I can get it put together. Thanks
you need 2 network cards... i would suggest 100baseTX since they don't cost that much any more but 10baseT would be good enough for you... after that you have to decide whether or not you want a hub or just connect the computers w/ a straight cable
hub advantages
connect more than 2 pcs
no special cables (needs twisted pair- normal network cable)
straight cable advantage
cheap and no need for hub
only need one cable
i would suggest picking up a cheap 10/100 hub and 2 cables and 2 10/100 nics so that there is very few compatibility issues if lets say a friend happens to bring his computer over...
overall it shouldn't cost u more than maybe 50-60 for good used stuff...
BTW: Check out Best Buy this week. They have the NetGear 4 port 10/100 hub for $29.99 (after $20 rebate). I have two of these (paid full price) and they work great.
