2 computers, both don't play commercial CD's
Both Iwill KK266 mobos with CMI 8738 4.1 sound onboard.

I built 2 desktops with the same main boards. One uses W2K, the other W98. Neither will play commercial audio CDs.
The sound is CMI 8738 4.1 sound onboard. They play .wav, .mp3 files.

Sounds like you don't have the audio cables hooked up to the drives or they're plugged in wrong or something. Easy fix: in device manager, double click your CD rom drive, and hit "properties" then check "enable digital audio" and you should have sound again.

I tried your recommendation with my W2K box but to no avail.
The cables are the same as when first installed and they used to work.
Hmm. I upgraded the bios on these 2 machines, but the 3rd, for my other nephew, was not upgraded and I believe it works.
Time to check that out.
