2 computers, 1 cable modem, same ISP, different results

I have Roadrunner and a cable modem that has been hooked up to a computer for a couple months running fine. I set up a second computer, but when I hook it up to the modem I get bad service, ie it will work for a couple minutes then everything will time out, then it will start working again 30 min later etc. Everytime I switch computers I unplug the modem for about 30 seconds. When I switch back to the original computer it runs fine. Anyone have thoughts on what is wrong?

Have you checked whether the computer that your adding to the network has tons of spyware and viruses? I had a similar problem with the service being bad and figured out that one of my computers was infested with viruses. After reformating the suspect computer, the network worked fine

Thanks for the replies. There is no spyware or viruses on either computer, in fact the new one has a fresh install on XP. Also, it is not a problem with speed. The TCP/IP settings are optimized on both and when it does work the new computer operates at full speed. It just stops working completely. I'm wondering if the modem or the ISP is having problems with the IP address changing or something along those lines.

Hmm.

Road Runner is using the MAC number of the first computer for Authentication (password).

I do not know how you plan to share, but it is time to get a Cable/DSL Router.

Ignore the prices in the links above. The same or similar hardware can be found for 60%-90% less.
