2 comps on network - One can see other but not vice versa

I just built a new system a couple of days ago and have been transfering files. I was able to share a folder on my new system and move files from my old one into that folder.

But, for some reason, my new computer can't see the old one on the network at all. They are both in the same workgroup, have no firewalls running, and have been rebooted several times.

Sure, I can transfer files as I described but it is a little inconvenient. Plus, I just want to understand how I can fix it so both computers can see eachother on the network.

Using a Netgear RT314 router (not that it should be a culprit in this)

assuming windows 2000 or XP, goto start, run, type 'cmd' and press enter.
type: ipconfig /all

post what it says for node type.

i don't know if i'd go so far as to use NetBEUI... 🙂
There are many reasons that can impede sharing on peer to peer Windows Network.

There is so much that you can do through written exchanges (as it is on the Internet). People who ask for help are not necessarily Geeks or people who care about the Geeks Computer culture.

NetBEUI is the last on the list of the page that I referred too.

Given that the rest of the stuff did not work or the help seeker does not know enough in order to follow up the other steps correctly, NetBEUI is a Functional solution.

Besides on a few computer set as a peer to peer Network the combo TCP/IP and NetBEUI does yield faster more dependable network.

In matter of fact remarks like yours make people who are happily sharing thier Network feel like they are doing something wrong. It is not fair to do it to people, Not every one is a Network Genius like might be.

Thanks guys. I just got it working after trying for the last half hour.

I'd fix one error and then move onto the next.

Things I changed:
Disabled windows firewall on this computer (thought it was disabled)
Enabled MS File and Printersharing on the other computer
Then just logged on as administrator to other computer when access it through workgroup

I was trying to get Everyone to work after changing various setting here and there. But, this works fine too.

Thanks again.
