IMO, it depends on your driving style and hobbies. For me, one car would suffice, but it'd be a lot less fun. Having two (or more) vehicles allows me to keep one for general commuting (with a focus on reliability and fuel economy), and one for modding and fun (less reliable, worse fuel economy, LOTS more fun).

I'm in the two or more camp.

Currently waiting to buy a pickup for general house work, extra winter vehicle, towing, etc.

In any case, if 1 vehicle breaks, you have to rent if you only have 1 vehicle.

Also, if you are at all capable of fixing a problem on your vehicle, the spare is nice so that you can wait and order parts on line, or wait for free time to fix, etc. etc.

For instance, the starter on my Jeep died (luckily in the garage). Hopped in the Impala and picked up a starter at the parts store and went to work.

$100ish bucks for the starter plus my time and a few beers is a lot cheaper than towing it to my mechanic and paying him to fix it.

Plus, the savings gave me an excuse (for the wife) to buy a new jack. :)

I would keep it, assuming it's about 3-4 years old you have a 2008? Keep up with the maintenance and it will treat you well.

My first car at 19, I purchased a brand new Scion tC in 2005, currently it has 124k+ and in the 7 years, the only thing that broke was that one low beam headlight burned out. I could not ask for more. I have only done the usual oil changes, brake pads, couple set of tires, spark plugs, transmission fluid every 15-30k.

It probably won't die any time soon. Keeping a car in good shape (and that doesn't guzzle gas) is usually a good decision.

Well, it's no secret that foreign parts are more expensive than domestic. They're also generally harder to work on, so more labor if a shop is doing it. But meh? I don't think the difference is that profound anymore.

Having 3 cars is great. It doesn't really matter which one I drive. :D

I'd like to have a car that is fun to drive in different ways sometime though.
