2 cable modems

Well heres the situation.

Basically we have a computer downstairs in the basement. Soon I will build a new computer and this one will be located upstairs. Now we have 2 cable modems. (One that worked, but they told us it was failing and ended up being on THEIR end and the new one they suggested we purchase to replace the old one. Diff story)

Obviously they both work and they have been registered with the cable company before. If I hooked these 2 up, would they generate different IP's? If I did would they generate IP since they are from the same household or different ones because of 2 different modems? If I do have 2 different IP's will this cost me more?

Now my question is would it be possible to use the 2 different modems in different rooms of the house? If not, what are my options of getting these 2 comps connected to the internet? Routers seem out of the question considering one is upstairs, and the other is on the opposite side of the house downstairs.

You can't use two cable modems on the same cable connection unless the ISP has specifically configured the connection to allow it. You should use a router to connect the two computers to one cable modem.

How far apart are these two computers going to be from each other? You might be able to use them with the router near one computer and have the other one connect wirelessly. If not, you may get better results positioning the router halfway between the two computers.

The best choice for speed and reliability would be to run an ethernet cable from both computers to the router but wireless is simpler if running cables is not an option.
