What ever happened the that new dollar coin?

Post Office dollars? You get those at the stamp vending machines at the post office.

you also get them from ticketing machines for the LIRR and metrocards in NY

When I worked as a teller during college a friend and I used to have contests to see who could go through the most $2.00 bills during a shift. The head teller got annoyed because we went through enough of them to cause her to have to order more. I used to make a point of getting a ton of them before going out barhopping because they were the perfect denomination for beers and tip back then.

Or directly from USMint.gov

Who the heck calls the post office dollars? They are legal tender that you can use anywhere.
