2 antennas does diversity work innately or do I need to enable it via software?

Does your AP support diversity? Figure that out first. Since you didn't give ANY information about your setup it's pretty much impossible to tell you if it does. If it does then it should be enabled by default and may or may not allow you to disable it from the admin interface.

this is for a laptop mini pci with 2 antenna connectors. BTW thanks you've answered my networking questions since oh, 1999.

Ah. Well, if your card and antenna support it then it will be enabled without any active participation. You'd have to go into the driver details, or utility depending on your utility (if it's even installed), and disable it if you wanted to do that.
